Passan also says that the Giants offered $168m for 7 years. He took less to go to the Cubs.

It's always about the money.

When asked about 7/$168MM, Sabean says Lester eliminated them before they had a chance to make the final offer (i.e., to top 6/$150MM).

Via ESPN Boston’s Gordon Edes (on Twitter), Giants GM Brian Sabean dismisses reports that his team offered seven years and $168MM, saying they “never got the chance to make our best offer.”
Guess it was not about the max dollars, but the offer had to be in the ballpark.  Sox still low balled by $20MM, so he went with the cubs.

Really a poorly handled negotiation by the Red Sox over the past year plus.  Lester would have been happy with 5/$110MM extension for 2015-2019 last off season, and the 4/$70MM last year was a stupid opening offer.  Perhaps the real dealing was between SF and the Cubs, with the talk about taking a lower Sox offer more to draw out the final 7th year option and some extra money, but I tend to think another couple million AAV from them would have gotten the deal (6/ $147MM).

Agreed, but good for Lester and the Cubs, I thought they'd be better with Maddon but now adding Lester they could be really good pretty soon.

Maybe if the entire Red Sox organization wasn't a bunch of flaming jerks he would have stayed.

But he still kind of wanted to go back, even after being traded!?! I agree with it being amazingly poorly handled, and even more amazed he considering going back there right until the end, even though they kept dicking him around.

I also find Sabean's quote odd. I mean, they "cut you out" so you couldn't make your BAFO? How about a frickin' email to the agent with the subject line "7/$168 - PRETTY PLEASE???"

Not exactly rocket science. If you want to make your offer, make your offer.

  True that.
I've seen some conflicting reports about this contract, with this huge signing bonus it may be more like 6 years-$175 million but I'm having a tough time following the reporting about it

MLBTR is saying that year 7 is for $25MM with a $10MM buyout.  Also, there are supposed to be $30MM in bonuses, $20MM up front and $10MM spread, so that first year he's probably looking at $30MM+ in cash.

Nice work if you can get it.

'In the end, it settled at a potential max value of exactly $100 million more than the Red Sox's first offer, a figure that Olney hints wasn't a coincidence."
