They have been somewhat unlucky all year. But they suffered from some less than stellar defense (If Zimmerman handles the ball like he usually does, they don't give up the 3rd run. And if Church makes that catch it doesn't happen either. But Church actually looked like the better Ryan in the field today given he should not be in CF.) Church did have some fine catches.
But I was disappointed in the management/coaches. I thought Manny handled the pitching decisions very well. Hill was pulled right when he needed to be. But I really thought he should have stuck with having Fick bunt with men on 1st and 2nd and no outs. That's a perfect bunting situation even for those of us that despise the typical sac bunt, especially given Fick's limited at bats, average, and their struggles to get hits in the game. If they advance the runners, they still have great odds at a big inning, but more importantly, plate a runner with a sac fly.
I am also not thrilled with Schneider being plucked to pinch hit and then play behind the dish after going seven complete games in a row.
The real kicker was when it was two outs and Belliard appeared to ground into a routine play, but Church beat the 2B to the bag and the ball was dropped. I looked up and expected Kearns to be crossing the plate!! How could he not have been halfway home by the time the ball was fielded when it was a two out situation? Tolman got an earful from our section. I don't know what was going on there, but Manny's relationship with Tolman can't be like Frank's with Eichen.
