Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports (Twitter links) that four former Major Leaguers have signed with the independent Atlantic League's Lancaster Barnstormers: left-hander Leyson Septimo, outfielder Brett Carroll, right-hander Luis Atilano and outfielder Cole Garner. Septimo (White Sox) and Carroll (Nationals) both appeared in the Majors as recently as 2012. Garner hasn't seen the bigs since a brief callup with the 2011 Rockies, and Atilano hasn't pitched in the Majors since 2010 with the Nats.

This is from back in December, but Tomo Ohka is attempting a comeback as a knuckleballer with the Blue Jays, presumably under the tutelage of Dickey: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/12/11/now-a-knuckleballer-tomo-ohka-reportedly-has-a-minor-league-deal-with-the-blue-jays/

The Red Sox have signed outfielder Corey Brown to a minor-league deal that includes a spring training invite.  Brown, 28, hit .254/.326/.473 for Triple-A Syracuse in the Nationals' system in 2013, splitting time between all three outfield positions. He has collected 45 plate appearances in parts of three seasons in the big leagues.

Phillies released Chad Gaudin.

http://blog.sfgate.com/athletics/2014/03/01/billy-burns-grabs-headlines-from-mother-nature-as-rangers-tie-2-2/

Quote

And to think, Billy Burns wasn’t in Bob Melvin’s original lineup.

A rainstorm that threatened today’s A’s-Rangers game prompted Melvin to scratch center fielder Coco Crisp from the lineup and insert Burns, and all Burns did was collect two hits, two runs, two steals and two assists, throwing out runners at third and home.

Burns was asked what part of his game he was most proud of.

“I’d say I was really happy with my bunt.”

Naturally.

Say what?

“I work on that a lot. To get it in a spot I want, it’s always a plus for me. And I was happy my throws were on line.”

Burns isn’t known for his arm strength but said the Nationals, who traded him to Oakland for Jerry Blevins in December, had him work on it over the winter, including getting good jumps and quick releases.

“I think the throwing was something we didn’t expect,” Melvin said. “He gets in front of it and gets good momentum behind it. He’s accurate. So he doesn’t look to be overwhelmed by playing against big-leaguers.”

Expect a lot more of Burns this month.

“He’s been terrific, exactly what we heard,” Melvin said. “He’s played well defensively, a fearless base runner obviously, a guy that doesn’t have to square the ball up to get a hit. He’s really impressed us this camp, and he’s going to continue to get a lot of playing time.”

Melvin added, “If he didn’t play today, we might have had a little trouble, huh?”

Burns’ uniform was dirty, his legs tired. During a postgame interview, he asked reporters, “You guys mind if I untie my cleats? My feet are killing me.”

Gotta like this guy.

KC signed Jesus Flores to a minor league deal with no invite to major league camp. He is behind Brett Hayes and Francisco Pina on their backup catcher depth chart, so I'd guess that he will not see the majors this season.

Pitcher-turned-outfielder Rick Ankiel has officially retired, according to an announcement made on Wednesday's Cardinals Spring Training broadcast.

The announcement -- made by St. Louis broadcaster Dan McLaughlin -- puts an end to the career of one of the most intriguing players of the past decade and one of the sport's best comeback stories.

Ankiel was released by the Mets on June 11 last season and had been reportedly looking for a contract until Wednesday's broadcast. According to McLaughlin, Ankiel is now hoping to find a front-office job somewhere.

Drafted by the Cardinals in 1997 out of high school in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Ankiel made his Major League debut as a pitcher for St. Louis two years later at age 20. Entering the 2000 season, he was rated the game's top overall prospect by Baseball America.

After a solid regular season, Ankiel came unraveled in the playoffs. He made one start against the Braves in the National League Division Series, in which he allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings and threw five wild pitches. Then, in an NL Championship Series start against the Mets, Ankiel lasted only two-thirds of an inning, throwing five of his 33 pitches to the backstop. After a similarly rough relief outing later in the series, Ankiel had completely lost his control.

He struggled in 2001 and was quickly sent to the Minor Leagues, and a year later he underwent Tommy John surgery. On the mound at least, Ankiel never fully recovered -- though he did pitch 10 innings as a reliever for the Cardinals in 2004.

But always one of the league's more adept pitchers with the bat, Ankiel made a return to the Majors as an outfielder for St. Louis in 2007. That turned out to be Ankiel's best season at the plate, as he posted a .285/.328/.535 slash line with 25 homers.

Ankiel would go on to spend seven seasons as a big league outfielder -- primarily in center -- where he showed off one of the game's best arms.

In total, Ankiel played for six teams, hitting .240 with a career .422 slugging percentage and 76 homers.

Certainly an odd career, but you can't say he went down quietly.  Fought for every season he got.

Nice job Rick, good luck in civilian life.

Agreed. He seemed to be a great mentor to Harper when he was just starting out.

One of the Nats' pitchers (Strassburg?) claimed that Ankiel had the best breaking ball on the team. Gave advice on how to throw the curve. Good luck, Rick.

There's nobody on the Nats by that name.
