After 9/11, baseball started doing this every 7th inning stretch.  It got to be too much of a delay (add in take me out to the ballgame and team's own 7th inning songs), so they reserve it for Sundays and big games now, like OD, the All Star game, and the playoffs.

Yankees kept it up during regular games for a long time after the rest of baseball dropped it.  They had Ronan Tynan sing a very long and elaborate version sing it.  People noticed it tended to freeze the opposing pitcher who was coming out to pitch the bottom of the 7th by adding an extra 5 minutes or so to the stretch (so it seemed).

I loved the version last night.  Excellent pace and the song's crescendo built properly.  Basic rule on patriotic songs is sing them as written unless you are Jimi Hendrix or Marvin Gaye.

That's pretty much everything in the US.

Europeans come over here and they're like, is it some sort of national holiday? What's with all the flags and everyone wearing them on their shirts

Naw, bro, it's Tuesday

I had a fat red state nag in a fanny pack and Old Glory t-shirt scream at me for not holding my hat over my heart during that song.  First I told her nicely to mind her business before I told her to freak off.

Because of September 11, 2001 and baseball is desperately trying to corner a niche market and compete with the NFL.

It's the dumbest thing baseball does.

I don't mind GBA, but I'm going to be pissing or getting beer when it plays not prostrating myself towards the flag

We're a couple of baptist hymns away from turning the 7th inning stretch into a red-state, conservative Woodstock/Sean Hannity orgy.

I will always associate GBA with the Broad Street Bullies, so if you want to root for a Philly team, have at it.

When he was president, Ronald Reagan wanted to change the national anthem to God Bless America.  I could never understand why, for Reagan was generally into keeping traditions.

Thankfully Rangers Park doesn't do it. Which, you'd think they would, this being Texas and all, but they don't, which makes me happy.
