What a weird OF that will be: Soriano, Wells, Gardner, Ellsbury, Ichiro, Choo?

They can always move Soriano back to second. It's vacant now.

there is definitely inflation afoot
Quote
1. Alex Rodriguez, $275,000,000 (2008-17)
2. Alex Rodriguez, $252,000,000 (2001-10)
3. Albert Pujols, $240,000,000 (2012-21)
4. Joey Votto, $225,000,000 (2014-23)
5. Prince Fielder, $214,000,000 (2012-20)
6. Derek Jeter, $189,000,000 (2001-10)
7. Joe Mauer, $184,000,000 (2011-18)
8. Mark Teixeira, $180,000,000 (2009-16)
. . . Justin Verlander, $180,000,000 (2013-19)
10. Felix Hernandez, $175,000,000 (2013-19)
11. Buster Posey, $167,000,000 (2013-21)

Most of those contracts are very recent, and there is a new number 4. Would the 300 million mark in another 6 years shock anyone?

I will wait to see if Harper corrects the big hole in his swing and improves in the field before valuation.

I think bryce and trout will surpass arods contract. Would you guys be opposed to trading bryce if he's looking for $300 plus?

Way too early to tell, but if he lives up anywhere near his potential he'd be worth it.

if he ends up being that good and we are contenders then we don't move him. we have time though to worry about it. lots of varibles could happen by then.

Yea I guess people are just assuming they'll need to sign Choo to replace Cano's bat  I don't think there are any really good offensive 2d baseman out there, are there?

According to this anonymous report, Robinson Cano was unhappy with the Yankees because he didn't like batting second. He wanted to get more RBIs.

So: Robinson Cano, not a stats guy.

Argh.

Only problems I see are:

- lefty relief pitcher (Oh, for O'Flaherty in pre-TJ state!). There seem to be a few

- IF backup. Espinosa can field but cannot hit. (Hitting reminds me of Don Lock, a fine fielder, or Dave Kingman without 40 HR power).

unbelievable:

Levine said Cano's age -- he turned 31 in October -- precluded the team from giving him the kind of long-term deal that backfired with Alex Rodriguez and could do the same in the cases of CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira.

"Now, if it was Mike Trout, I'd offer him a 10-year contract," Levine said, referring to the Los Angeles Angels' 22-year-old center fielder. "But for people over 30, I don't believe it makes sense."

Later Friday, MLB spokesman Pat Courtney told multiple Los Angeles media outlets that the league would be investigating the Yankees for tampering after Levine dropped Trout's name.

Yep, that's tampering.  I don't think anything was meant by it, obviously, but it's not something the Angels want an executive saying about a player they'd like to extend long-term in a perfect world.  Harmless, doesn't really change anything, but I couldn't blame them for being annoyed.

Yep,  the Yankees are thinking he'd be good for a ten year deal at his current age-old that totally killed a threat of non-tender in contract negotiations

Like I said, it doesn't change anything, I don't need to be told that. But that doesn't mean a team has no right to be annoyed that the Yankees are commenting on the value of their star player.  Rules are rules and the only way to enforce them is to disregard intent.  Of course there's that old Yankee attitude that every young star is a Yankee prospect and they know MLB won't actually slap the Yankees on the wrist.
