Lemme see what swag I have from the end of last year.

A frozen four faux Bauer paper helmet they gave the crowd Saturday night.  That's my Halloween costume.

The friends I went to Pittsburgh gave me a framed picture from the front page of the pittsburgh post gazette with a ticket.

CCSP has a mini-stick with the Frozen Four teams up on the wall of the main bar, and near the OTB machine they have a copy of the same page 1 article.

I've got a 2013 National Champions blue mini stick, a 2013 blue hanging banner, my ticket and more copies of the Post Gazette front page and sports page, a Frozen Four program, banner. and hockey puck, a blue frozen four tee shirt and a white National Champs tee shirt I bought that night.

But this is a 2014 thread, so that stuff is only for nostalgia.

4 Ivies (Princeton, Brown, Yale, and Dartmouth) open the season in Newark, NJ at the Liberty Invitational on 10/25-26.  Yale also plays Harvard at Madison Square Garden on 1/11.  25th 1anniversary of Harvard's national championship.  Reminds me I've got to get tickets.

Rematches with QU are 11/9 at Hamden and 2/14 at the Whale.

ECAC finals are at Lake Placid.  Bridgeport to host the East Regional (Yale and Fairfield are hosts).

With the two top goalies, two of the top 3 scoring forwards (plus one other forward), and one regular defenseman graduating, Yale takes a few hits, but Agostino and Root are back, 5 defensemen who played regularly at the end of the year return, and they have a goalie coming in from Omaha in the USHL, Alex Lyon who I think was highly rated.  Only one forward was drafted this past year.

It looks like there is good returning positional depth, including a lot of rising sophomores who played big roles in the NCAA run.  As always, replacing a senior goalie with guys who have not played or hardly played in college is going to be a threshold issue.

Is there any good NCAA hockey in the DC area?    If not, what is the closest spot?

Not really.  No D1.  Robert Morris, Penn State, Ohio University, Princeton?

I've thought Navy should start a program and maybe one of Mayland or George Mason.  Navy has a national student body and Air force and Army have programs.  I'm thinking the high schools and preps in the mid-Atlantic could form the basis of a team at one of the local state schools.  I've not been to Kepler, but if there were stands GMU could play there.  I don't know if there's ice at Maryland in the Comcast center..

A few interesting results last night.  Biggee is #1 ( ) Lowell losing to Sacred heart, 2-1.  Maine (new coach, former Allain assistant) lost to St Lawrence 3-1.  Bowling Green tied Union at Union 3-3.  Penn State won in the opener for their new arena, beating Army 4-1.

Notre Dame (#8) crushed Western Michigan (#18) 4-0.   Providence (#14) crushed Minnesota State (#11), 5-1.  Alaska Anchorage topped QU (#10) at Anchorage, 3-1.  No Dak (#7), St Cloud St (#9) and Denver beat visitors UVM, Bemidji St., and Merrimack.  Miami (#2) beat Ohio State, 6-2, so probably lines up as #1 next week.  Minnesota (#5) and Wisconsin (#3) won, with BC (#4), Yale (#6),and Michigan (#11) idle.

Providence finished well last year and has a good goalie.  Maybe a team to watch.

Maryland has a very good club hockey program (i.e., long standing). A good amount of kids from the DMV and NY/NJ play for it. I wish MD could go D1, but with no rink on campus and the only rink options at Wells/Laurel, there's no way.

Hmmm...that'd be cool.  Not sure it's in the cards next weekend, though.  We'll have to see.

Sounds great.  What's the word on QU's goalie situation?

Sullivan has taken to calling them "The BobKittens" because they apparently have a lot of freshmen.

Maryland and its sports are short on money I think, but them moving to the Big Ten might hopefully push them towards starting a team. Let them play in Cole Fieldhouse. Maybe the Under Armour guy can fund most of it

Maryland just eliminated a bunch of sports,  I doubt they add something as expensive as hockey

With the Big 10 network showing a couple of games a week, there's some TV revenue attached to Big 10 hockey.  If UA were looking to expand into hockey-related lines (unis or maybe even pads), there could be some funding.

This is why I think Mason or maybe G-Town would pick up the sport quicker than UMD.  Can Kettler be modified to add have 3000 seats?  Is the Patriot Center capable of hosting ice shows?

Does the TV revenue offset the cost?  Between venue,  scholarships,  travel,  coaches and equipment (plus matching title nine expenditures) hockey seems pretty expensive

#14 QU sweeps #9 Lowell this weekend, home and away.

#2 Wisconsin hates Commonwealth Avenue, 9-2 to #7 BC and 7-3 to #15 BU.

#5 Michigan ties and beats #13 UNH @ UNH in 2 OT games

#17 RPI wins @ BU and tops Sacred Heart at home.  #16 Union loses twice at home v. Lake Superior St.

#1 Red Hawks and #6 Fighting Souix No Dak split.

#3 Minnesota tops Bemidji twice to probably take over first.

#4 Notre Dame wins over visiting Michigan Tech friday and plays today.

#10 Providence wins v. AIT Saturday.

# 12 Denver loses twice in Alaska to Fairbanks and Anchorage.

#11 St Cloud idle.

#7 Yale and #19 Cornell have not opened their seasons, but Yale beat Ontario IT 9-2 in an exhibition.

I'll guess Quinnipiac is back in the top 10, and that the top 4 are Minnesota, Notre Dame, Michigan, and BC.

Big weekend for Clarkson this weekend with a home twin bill vs. Colorado College.
