Follow the Prospects: Nic Pivetta, RHP
« Topic Start: June 20, 2013, 09:40:06 PM »

Nic Pivetta

Height: 6'05"

Weight: 220lbs

Bats: Right, Throws: Right

DOB: 02/14/93

Hometown: Victoria, BC Canada

HS:  Lambrick SS | Graduated in 2011

School: New Mexico Junior College (Hobbs, NM)

Position: Pitcher

Drafted: 4th round 136 overall

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Pivetta was just another arm as a freshman at New Mexico JC in 2012, when he went an undistinguished 4-1, 4.83 with 22 walks and 29 strikeouts in 54 innings. But with an extra year under his belt after sitting out his senior season of competition in 2011 while in high school in Victoria, B.C., with what was determined to be a strained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, Pivetta was a different pitcher when he returned to school last fall for his sophomore year. All of a sudden his fastball consistently registered 91-95 mph, peaking at 97, and he had little trouble reaching those elevated levels with a clean delivery and easy arm action, or hitting his spots while also getting solid-average sinking action on his fastball. He also flashed an average curve after being predominantly a fastball/changeup pitcher as a freshman. Almost overnight, Pivetta became a marked man for this year’s draft and he has done little or nothing this spring but enhance his reputation as one of the elite arms in the junior-college ranks. Through his first 11 starts, he was 8-2, 2.92 and had walked just 14 in 71 innings, while striking out 49. With one or two minor exceptions, he has been solid every time out, working at 91-94 and peaking at 96 while generally holding his velocity deeper into starts. With his school’s location in remote eastern New Mexico, Pivetta hasn’t been the easiest player to scout, but a delegation of upwards of 100 scouts was on hand when his team travelled to Phoenix in March, and he didn’t disappoint with a fastball that was still at 95 mph on his 93rd pitch in the seventh inning.

Nic Pivetta, a native Canadian, has a very smooth delivery, Kline said and he has a plus curveball to go along with an 89-95-mph fastball and good feel for his changeup. Kline said he could be as a potential No. 3 starter in the major leagues.

Pivetta is fine in Hagerstown. A 17% K rate coupled with a 40% GB rate doesn't merit a promotion.

Sean's one sentence analysis: Pivetta is assumed to be headed to the bullpen due to only having 2 solid pitches, but he could improve his changeup and curveball enough to make it as a mid rotation starter due to his impressive control and velocity.

The big (6'5" 215 lb) Canadian righty put up solid numbers (6-1, 3.36 ERA, 14 walks allowed in 75 and 2/3 innings pitched) but had troubles punching people out (5.83 K/9).

Baseball America ranked Pivetta 105th on their top 500 list, saying, "intrigues scouts with his 6-foot-5, 215-pound build and a fastball that has been clocked as high as 97 mph. As a starter, he pitches more in the 90-93 mph range. His slider and changeup show flashes of being above-average but have been inconsistent this spring. Pivetta has some funk to his delivery, as he's a bit of a short strider with a low three-quarters arm slot."

Matt Garrioch of Minor League Ball ranked Pivetta 321 on his top 500 list, giving him a 25/50 present/potential ranking. Garrioch is not convinced that Pivetta's increased velocity will be a permanent thing.

Pivetta was ranked eighth on Perfect Game's top 100 Junior College prospects list. In the article, Allan Simpson noted that Pivetta "was just another arm as a freshman at New Mexico JC in 2012...but with an extra year under his belt after sitting out his senior season of competition in 2011 while in high school in Victoria, B.C., with what was determined to be a strained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, Pivetta was a different pitcher when he returned to school last fall for his sophomore year. All of a sudden his fastball consistently registered 91-95 mph, peaking at 97, and he had little trouble reaching those elevated levels with a clean delivery and easy arm action, or hitting his spots while also getting solid-average sinking action on his fastball. He also flashed an average curve after being predominantly a fastball/changeup pitcher as a freshman."

Tony Schad of MLB.com wrote that Pivetta "mostly sits in the low-90s during starts...also throws a solid curveball, which could be an above-average pitch in the future, and an inconsistent changeup...The 20-year-old could be a starter if he develops his changeup. Otherwise, he projects as a late-inning power arm out of the Nationals' bullpen."

Definitely pitching very well. Well enough for a promotion but I don't think there is any need to rush him. He racked up some innings last year, but this is his first real success. Might as well them him continue to put it together before the bump. He missed his senior year of high school in Canada, then only pitched 50 innings his first year in JuCo. With a full staff at the big league level and multiple arms ahead of him in AA and AAA, we might as well let him continue to build his confidence in Potomac. If he's still doing very well come July, then give him the bump. Imo.
