He's asked Scherzer to pitch to him.

Another dinger tonight. 3rd in AA (14th overall). He's taking the next step this year. Let's see if he can hit a little more in AA, but very promising.

According to Bob Nightengale at USAToday, he was one of the two prospects in a Robertson deal this off-season. Deal fell apart for money.  Currently at AA after finishing the year there last year.  .277 / .370  / .453, 5HR in 165 PAs.  low double digit walk rate with a 1 out of 4 PA K rate. Still only 22.

Longerhan at FG did not have him in his Top 20 KATOH+ stat-driven projeection, but had this to say about him before the season:

Quote
Drew Ward, 3B, 0.9 KATOH+ – Ward was really bad at third during the 2015 Fall League but was competent there a year later, and I think there’s a chance he stays, though his most likely future home remains first base. Ward is already a 30 runner and is huge, a wide-framed 6-foot-3. He only turned 22 during the offseason, so he’s likely to continue filling out and move to first. He has big raw power and, historically, a patient approach. The power and patience are the most likely paths toward a big-league role, but Ward’s stiff, long swing is problematic. The offensive bar at first base is high and unforgiving, and without a viable hit tool at first base or any defensive versatility, it’s hard to project Ward in any sort of big-league role. If he shows he can reach base and hit for some power at Double-A this year, we can start to talk.

Still a fan. Post the Nightengale article?

The easiest fix for the Nationals would be to acquire closer David Robertson from the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox are shopping him, the Nationals need him, and they nearly completed a deal for him before spring training. The Nationals, according to executives with direct knowledge of the deal, were to send 19-year-old left-hander Jesus Luzardo and minor league infielder Drew Ward to the White Sox for Robertson, with the White Sox eating about half of the $25 million remaining in his contract. But the deal got hung up over money.

There's some skepticism at NationalsArmsRace that the Nats would have turned down the deal.  The links are in the Closer Thread.

My bad, just saw that... very interesting. I'll hold my tongue on Robinson here, but Ward/Luzardo would be a fine haul for a rebuilding team.

Definitely hard to believe the Nats would turn that down.

Even if the Nats had to pay  $15mill for 2 years, Ward and Luzardo for Robertson would be a steal. A guy who is seemingly blocked and hasn't exactly lit up the minors and a guy who's 3/4 years(minimum) away from the bigs that hasn't thrown a professional pitch yet for a proven closer is a great deal.

Ward's saving grace is that he's only 22 but he's just about done as a prospect.

111 Ks in 353 ABs to go along with an .OPS barely north of .700 are hard metrics to ignore.

Believe he's rule 5 eligible after this year and I highly, highly doubt he's protected.
