Tweet from Adam Kilgore: Watching a minor league game today. Drew Ward, 18, is monstrous. He's also playing with the Potomac team, which is interesting.

Destin Hood looked really good in a uniform, too.

Drew Ward as a Junior in high school hit .556/.765/1.190 with 56 BB's to 8 K's. I think he had nine home runs.

I know it was light competition, but you can't complain about the results. I was jumping around high school stats for Destin Hood and Bryce Harper. The stats for Hood and Ward were comparable. Did you know that Bryce Harper jumped from 3 home runs as a sophmore in high school to 29 home runs in Junior College in what would have been his junior year in high school?

Maybe Drew Ward could make a similar jump from 17 to 18; the joys of prospecting.

Ward 3/4 with a double, HR, 2 RBIs, 2 Runs, walk tonight in Hagerstown.

He's starting to catch fire with three straight multi-hit games. .316/.381/.516 overall in 57 ABs.

Ward is about to explode onto the scene and gain recognition. Legit talent at a young age

Drew Ward now at .316/.400/.506/.906as a 19 yr old in the sally league. You come around on him yet?

Don't scout the stat line, especially when it's just 79 AB - and a huge chunk of that production came in one series at West Virginia.

Looks like Ward hasn't played since the 4th.  Any news about why?

How's this for a whole lot of nothing.

Hagerstown Suns third baseman Drew Ward is back with the team. He was out of the lineup for an undisclosed reason. Ward is batting .316 with 25 hits in 19 games, four doubles, one triple, three homers and 24 RBIs. He could return to the lineup any day now. The Suns are an amazing 25-7

Yeah, more information would have been nice.  Undisclosed can mean anything.  I hope we will get the reason at some point.

Ward getting hot. Last 10 games: .432/.475/.811 with 8 Doubles, 2 HRs, 9 RBIs.

Needs to learn to walk more but have to be overall pleased with his first full season campaign.

Makeup: Interesting player; looks to have fun; goofing off in warmups and pre-game workouts; turns on the professional look during the game; annoyingly complains about every call; not bad makeup, but has some quirks that certain individuals may grow tired of.

Ward has raw power and a big frame, but the hit tool and defense will drag him down at higher levels. He is getting away with the hit tool currently due to the competition level. Any secondary pitch that is a solid-average offering has overwhelmed Ward, who simply cannot recognize good spin. The swing has holes, but I do think it can be ironed out eventually. The swing can be shortened and balanced, but it does not solve to neurological issues of recognizing spin.

Ward is likely going to face issues at the next two levels, but he could piece it together and provide a few average seasons in the majors. This is not an impact prospect, but the tools are there just enough to provide some value. I do not think the OFP and realistic role are far apart, as the player does not have a large amount of growth left. However, he does have age on his side.

odd. so they are dooming a 19 year old playing his first full season in A ball..

I agree he does have a lot of development left but I would give him at least 2-3 more years before I'd write him off.

I'm sure Tucker Blair is an expert on the neurological issues that may genetically prevent a player from ever getting better at recognizing offspeed pitches. After all, he graduated with a B.A. in Entrepeneurial Studies at York College in Pennsylvania and works as a Project Analyst at a management consulting firm.

I'm not saying he's wrong, but scouts (especially amateur scouts) are the WORST when they stray from "this is what the kid is on the field right now" into "this is what a likely projection is for this kid". The first is observational data they're trained for, the second is usually conjecture.

one would think that being capable of interpreting what they see would be what make a scout good at their job (not saying Mr. Blair falls into this category)
