I looked a couple days ago, and Souza's numbers had fallen...down under .280. Seems to be starting alongside Goodwin.

Saw Souza at H'burg yesterday. Hits hard. Probably the only strong hitter on the team. Batting about .274, but, with Burns, was in the middle of the game-winning rally.

Strike up the band!  Souza with 4 for 4 to lead Senators to division championship.  This guy is intriguing and I'm wondering if he is on the 40-man roster. If not, Rizzo better start thinking about it. 5-tool outfielders are worth protecting.

Souza also stole a base and had 2 RBI's with his four hits. H'burg announcers mentioned Souza's speed.

From the H'burg website: "Steven Souza, Jr. led the way offensively with a 4-for-4 night, including three doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. He also stole a pair of bases."

Souza now hitting .375 in the AFL.  2 for 3 today while stealing 2nd and 3rd in the top of the 6th to put himself in position to score on a bloop single. He needs to be on this team next year---power, speed, multiple positions.

Ended up 3 for 4, with 3 SBs (9 so far in AFL...misprint?)  Batting .412 now.  Played CF today.

Skole went hitless, now batting .217.

Benincasa with the blown save.

9 SBs in 5 games  And he has legit pop. Nats have to protect him if he is rule 5 eligible.

Now that Marrero is off the 40 man, hopefully they add Souza ASAP.

Souza just tweeted how thankful he was to be on the roster.  There you go.

Yep, that was a no-brainer move. Be interesting to see where he ends up in '14.

Do you guys think this guy can play at first? At 6'3 he has excellent size and could have some good range with his past history of playing at SS..q

He has played first in the minors.

He played 1st and 3rd at Potomac, played OF at Harrisburg.  Again, think Michael Morse (who came up as a SS).  He's the 2nd coming of Morse, hopefully without the injuries.  Same type of personality too, was always clowning around with fans.

AAA

Yeah, maybe with a septemebr call up if he has another good year, or maybe sooner if LaRoche gets hurt.

Might be sooner as 4th or 5th OF, depending on what the team decides with T Moore, E Perez, and Corey Brown. Souza hits. Also has played CF, hinting that he might be a good fielder. I won't predict what they do with Perez and Brown...one of the two would have gotten substantial Washington playing time if the Nats saw them as having a future.

No. 9 Nats prospect: Steven Souza Jr.

It was another attention grabbing season for outfielder Steven Souza Jr., in the Nationals organization.

Souza also has garnered positive feedback from Baseball America, which has him moved up to the No. 9 spot in the Nationals' Top 10 prospects for 2014, according to Baseball America national writer Aaron Fitt.

No. 9 OF Steven Souza, Jr.

"He is kind of a neat story and a talent," Fitt said. "I have heard scouts saying they really believe in him, that they think he can be a Matt Holliday-type tool package. That might be a reach and even the scout that told me that doesn't think he will be Matt Holliday, but he has heard other people say that."

The Holliday comparison is a nice one to hear. Fitt said Souza brings the frame at 6-foot-3, 220 lbs., and has made great progress the last two seasons.

"There is that kind of ability. He is strong, he can run," Fitt said. "He throws well up there. Defensively, he is still learning the outfield. I think he has a chance to be a good enough defender out there.

"I think he is a late bloomer. I believe in this guy. At this point, I think he is going to be a big leaguer. He is almost there. He is in Double-A. He needs to stay healthy. I think he is going to hit for some power. He can hit for average, too. His approach is good. I think he has a chance, I really do."

Souza hit .300 in 77 games for Double-A Harrisburg last season. He connected on 23 doubles, one triple, 15 homers, 44 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. He hit well in the Arizona Fall League, batting .357 in 11 games with a .426 on-base percentage.

It is very conceivable that Souza could make that jump similar to Tyler Moore's rise two seasons ago. He certainly has the power and consistency at the plate to become a factor for the Nationals sooner than later.

He might make a move up the organization like Moore... but they're certainly not similar players. Souza has a much broader skill set than Moore possesses.

Much more versatile than Moore. Could easily take Tracy's slot

Could be a battle between him and Moore for the 4th bench spot. Would he be better served playing full time at AAA?

You may even see a carousel on the 24th and 25th man, which wouldn't be a bad thing.  Blue911 could play the calliope while guys like Moore, Souza, Mattheus, Garcia and the like shuffle back and forth between Syracuse / Harrisburg and South Capitol St.

I've always liked that sort of roster strategy.  IF you gas a reliever in a mop up role, swing him off the roster and bring in another guy for a couple of weeks if they are equivalent arms.  If a team has 3 lefties in the pen, maybe you call up an extra RH hitter.  A guy is not quite DL'd but is less than fully available, maybe go with a shorter pen.
