Baltimore needs to be careful. Ed Reed, Cary Williams, Paul Kruger, and Dannell Ellerbe are all hitting free agency along with Flacco. With as much money as they'll be giving Flacco, they won't have the cap space to keep all of those guys, so their defense may get totally screwed up. (They'll also need a Ray Lewis replacement.)

Might as well kick off the new year with this:  Tom Brady signs a 3 year contract that pays him about half the going rate for QBs of his level.  This gives NE flexibility to add players around him.

Quote
The extension will pay Brady a $3 milion signing bonus immediately, in addition to salaries of $7 million in 2015, $8 million in 2016 and $9 million in 2017. Brady told Sports Illustrated five years ago he wanted to play until he was 40, at least, and this will accomplish that. He turns 40 on Aug. 3, 2017.

he cuts his impact on the cap by $15 million over the next two years.

49rs have a deal to trade Alex Smith but they can't announce it until 3/12.  The expectation is that he goes to the Chiefs.

There is a little known addendum to the Brady contract that Giselle has agreed to appear in the Victoria Secret ads for the Super Bowl for $15MM over the next 2 years.

it's their own fault for not extending him earlier- why would you put yourself in a position where your starting qb is going to be able to play out his rookie deal?

As a Steelers' fan, I couldn't be happier.   This has so many downside possibilities that I'm almost giddy with delight.   :)

Mike Wallace to Miami.

Kruger to Cleveland. Too bad they don't have a quality QB.

I  kind of expected Welker to leave, although I think this is a pretty cheap signing for Denver.   Apparently, he was insulted when the Pats offered him $10 MM / 2 years but took $12MM guaranteed from Denver.   The Pats figured the $10MM was fair because, when you add in the $9.5 MM he got when he was franchised, the total is similar to what was almost agreed to last summer (3 years, $19 MM).  Welker threw that out because he assumed the risk of playing on the franchise contract.

I think that this kind of clarifies the Pats offense a bit.  The TEs go back to being the threats out of the middle of the field, and the WRs go back to being wide threats.   Hernandez becomes more important, and you will see him in the slot more with a 3d tight end in more running sets.

I was disappointed that Boldin was traded rather than released because I though he would have been the perfect wide out in this system.  I'm guessing Baltimore thought this way too and dealt him out of the conference rather than let an opponent pick him up.

I'm a bit surprised at the contract the Pats threw at Amendola given his injury history.  It would be nice to have one healthy guy available to catch a ball.

To be sure, Amendola is more physically talented than Welker... health is the big question with him, though.
