Felix Hernandez new contract 7/$175m
« Topic Start: February 08, 2013, 10:49:08 AM »
7 years for $175 Million.   He is very good, and young, but man I don't see $25 Million for a pitcher.

I bet Verlander is very happy to hear that news though.

Strasburg will be $210M - 7 years at $30M per by the time he is eligible..

when you think about it, he's eligible something like 4 years down the road.  $30MM AAV is only 20% over $25MM.  That's less than 5% inflation, compounded, per year, with a ton of new TV money coming into MLB and coming out of a few years of depressed contracts due to the economy.  7/$210MM is likely to be low in AAV, if not years.  Given his arm injury and his motion, you might see something like 6/$192MM.

Hmmm ... I'd laugh a dark laugh if he had to get TJS

Very few pitchers get these deals, and all of them (to my knowledge) have had perfect health records when they get them. So Strasburg has a ways to go to get more than 5 years guaranteed imo...

If it takes that much to sign Strasburg, I'm not sure that I'd do it.  I'd lean towards not doing it.  Depends on how he does this year, re-signing JZ, seeing what happens with Gio, the guys in the minors, and other stuff.

He's not a free agent until 2017. We've got some time to form a more educated opinion.

EDIT: Not to mention that by then the super ace free agents of 2015 (Kershaw, Verlander, Price) will likely set new records with these deals so $175M probably won't be the standard by the time this becomes relevant.

It will take more to sign SS if he stays healthy.  He is a better pitcher than Hernandez.

People hope he's a better pitcher -  Hernandez has been consistently putting up 200 innings a year since age 22 with mid 3 or lower eras.

Boras likes to take out a record when he signs a major free agent.  Either AAV, years, or total dollars.  If SS is healthy and lives up to expectations (maintains three plus plus pitches, walks on water, heals some lepers, etc...), then I could see fewer years with a record AAV.
