Muscles do not teach one how to hit the ball.

Muscles do not teach one how to hit the ball.

Even strong guys who hit poorly can really launch them when they hit it.  Bernie doesn't

Because he doesn't know how to hit the ball.

Is that why he batted .291 with a .372 OBP?

Sure. What about his other years.

Large biceps don't really help you hit any ball. Hands, wrists and forearms are much more important.

Also a strong core is needed to really drive the ball.  Large arms help to muscle the bat but the legs, hips, and trunk generate all the torque needed to drive the ball real far.

He wasn't built in the other years.  Last year was his first muscley season.

False. For the past three years he's looked like that at the start of the season. By the end of August most of its gone.

Quote
Roger Bernadina arrived today, and he is probably the leader in clubhouse for Best Shape of His Lifeiest player here. He looked more like a strong safety than a left fielder. Bernadina took some batting practice with coaches the other Nationals players who have gotten in early, and many of them joked with him about how much muscle he's put on.

Bernadina spent most of his offseason in the Netherlands, where he spent much of his youth and where he now lives. He worked out with a trainer who he's known for a few years, sometimes lifting weights twice a day. He said he ended last year at 192 pounds, and he packed on more than 10 pounds.

Bernadina, who will compete with Rick Ankiel and Michael Morse for the starting left field spot this spring, said his offseason training was motivated by the end of his 2010 season. He wore down physically and mentally, he said, and it showed in his performance. He went 15 for 97 with three extra-base hits and 11 walks from Aug. 31 on. After his rookie season, Bernadina feels like he'll be more prepared to handle the rigors of a full year in the majors.

"In August, I was fine," Bernadina said. "In September, I ran out of gas a little bit. It's that mental grind. For next time, I'll know it. It is definitely a long season. But it's no excuse. What happened, I can only learn from it."

If anything, Bernadina works his ass off.

He is brilliant off the bench. Love him as a backup outfielder. Just have to keep from playing him consistently for long stretches as a starter.

Don't get me wrong, he had a hell of a year last year off the bench... but that's where he belongs. He's a 4th OF at best, at least on this team. We can give him away to some other team and let him try starting. Sure he's jacked, but let's not all "Ooooh" and "Aaaah" the guy. It hasn't helped him in the power game.

I wouldn't mind getting rid of him and adding Eury Perez or Cory Brown to the 4th OF spot. I just don't trust Bernie enough to repeat his year last year after seeing his previous 4 seasons.

hope he realizes he's still not a power hitter.  do what you did in 2nd half ... shorten up your swing and try and get on base.

That would be good advice for Mr. Werth, too.
