Will Derek Jeter have more or less range than a fire hydrant?

Awesome article on Loria.  Some highlights -
-he picks who gets sent down to the minors based on whether or not he likes them
-is extremely devoted to his incompetent trainer
-gives motivational speeches to the team

“Everyone knows he does it,” the player said of Loria demoting players. “It makes it hard to play. Every time you come into the clubhouse after a bad outing, you’re thinking, ‘Oh, [bleep]! Is Loria going to send me down because he’s [angry] tonight, just because Loria’s in an [expletive] mood?’

somehow I don't see them ever landing another big free agent absent an astronomical overpay

Doesn't that work in Loria's favor?

he'll be able to offer fair market value for years without having to worry about it being accepted

Charlie says he's going to bat Demon fifth. At this point I think the whole Philadelphia Org is trolling their fans

Crashburn Alley has been blasting the Phillies lately. It's been glorious.

Even Nats fans should follow that guy.

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that Brian McCann looks doubtful tonbe ready for opening day. Smart move to let Ross walk.

For what he's worth?  Would it be fair of him to insist on negative pay to balance out the last 6 years?

We may need a Darwin awards thread.  Elijah Dukes deserves honourable mention.

Things that make Lintyfresh happy: when the ZiPS computer projection system says that the #1 player most comparable to Jason Kipnis, stats-wise, is Felipe Lopez.

Verducci on the O's chances of repeating last year's surprising success.  Short version - not likely.

Put this in the wrong thread and moving here.  Pretty good article on the O's from Verducci.

Surprised the Astros didn't snap up Mike Carp from the Mariners.

If you're going to be bad... you should run about every single waiver wire guy through your camp/roster to see if anyone might be a surprise.

I've heard Carp's name from a couple of people this offseason, including my buddy who lives in Seattle who claims the Mariners will "regret" letting him go. What's the deal here? I see nothing special from his history, and I don't know what a team's going to do with a LH1B who can't hit RHP (.241/.323/.398 in 470 PA).

Why is he such a popular name for baseball geeks?

I don't really have an answer. He just passes my eye test for whatever reason.

He just has the look of someone that "should" do well.

Carp to Boston makes some sense.  I think the Carp fans look at his ISO in AAA going from .174 to .259 to .307 with a 10% walk rate from 2009 - 2011 (age 23 - 25) and think that if you can get him to a fair ballpark, the power can emerge.  He clearly took a step back last year, but his 2011 in the majors was above average.  He does have reverse splits in the majors, but I don't know (haven't pulled) his minor league splits.   Boston clearly wants to see if he can beat out Nava and/ or Overbay as a lefty bat to pair with Gomes and Napoli.  This made a bit more sense before Overbay was signed.  It is just cash, so why not?
