40 man roster - rule 5 deadline
« Topic Start: November 19, 2012, 09:01:51 PM »
Kilgore posts that the deadline to set the 40 man roster before the rule 5 draft is tuesday midnight.

The Nats currently have 36 players  on the roster, including Flores and Lannan.  Players who were acquired in 2008 and 18 or younger (essentially high school draftees and international signings) and players 19 or older acquired in 2009 must be added or can be lost via rule 5.

add your speculation about what moves the Nats will make below.  Then this thread can turn into the Rule 5 thread and a thread with news about other signings and non-roster invites.

Some of the off roster players who would need to be added or exposed include Karns, Kobernus, Bloxom, Rosenbaum, and Hood, according to some of the commenters.   I have not checked that before this post.

Here's the current 40 man (36) per MLB.com: http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=was

Not to crib too much out of Kilgore's post, but he speculates you may see Lannan or Flores traded before the deadline.

Deadline as in tomorrow night deadline?  I don't know if I see that.  I doubt we'd get much for either.

Brad Meyers would have to be added or exposed again.

Nats Prospects speculates on a few AFL names:
Quote
Options or not, Perry did not make a strong case to account the hype that he can be the #5 starter for the parent club. He’s likely to stay on the 40-man for now, but don’t be surprised if he’s returned to the bullpen next spring.

Demny is a Rule 5 possibility and as much as Rizzo covets hard-throwing righties, the bet here is that he won’t be protected. Demny’s future is in the bullpen and the whispers that the velocity has slipped are other reasons to believe he’ll be exposed.

Kimball may still be recovering from injuries, but it’s hard not to see him getting dropped from the 40-man today or tomorrow (if he hasn’t already) in the hopes that he’ll pass through waivers. What we’ll never know is whether that was the plan all along.

Sign of the team's profound evolution over the past couple years: all but three of the guys on our 40-man have played in the major leagues. And 30 or so of them are major-league-quality players.

Do we have enough pitchers to fill the AAA team?  He could be serviceable as a place holder.

This reminds me of this morning, when I walked into work and a really huge Rangers fan at my office - he has season tickets in the exec section right behind home plate - said, "Hey, I saw the Rangers signed a former National. Scott Olsen." And I said, "Somebody's gotta pitch in Round Rock."

Man, it's amazing we're at the point so soon where Maya is truly an albatross. I can't believe that we've come so far as to no longer hope and pray he works out, displays the talent we signed him for. That we're so stacked as to not need to pray for a miracle? It's a good feeling.

Same with Wang. I'd long argued to keep him, to not have wasted all the money and time rehabbing him and have another team grab him and he suddenly returns to form and pays off for them. Now? Dump him, we don't need him, he's done.

Damn it's nice to have come so far in so little time. Although on the topic of AAAA pitching, I still wish Martis had worked out... He showed such promise for a couple of games, then... well, whatever team he's with now certainly hasn't fixed him. Still blows my mind though. I never, ever, buy jerseys of question marks. When he first came up, he was so dominant and had such good stuff I jumped at getting his jersey custom made. Money wasted now, although I'm probably one of the only morons around who has his jersey in my closet.

Tying it back into this thread: its just so nice not to spend the fall obsessing over Rule 5 guys. We're so stacked that not only isn't there room for them, but by and large any guys we lose don't matter. Far better than when we would worry about some AA player who may or may not work out, but who we desperately need to keep and find room to protect. Same applies for going nuts over which Rule 5 we should pick up in the hopes of not losing another 100 games. Now there's not a Rule 5 around who would improve the team or just be worth keeping on the active roster all season. Winning sure makes being a fan easier and less stressful.

Gotta add Karns if he needs to be protected.

No one will go after Demny, Rosenbaum.

Is Purke really on the 40 man roster? That's pathetic if true. He will never be healthy. Waste of a spot.

I believe he was signed to a major league contract.  I assume he'll get a 4th option year because of injuries and spending the whole year in the minors.  My guess is we know something about him before 2016.

Gorzo is probably another pitcher who might be released before the roster is set tonight.  He's pretty expensive for a lefty long man.

Yes, Purke and Rendon were both signed to major league deals.

That's no longer allowed under the new CBA.

Get rid of H-Rodriguez. Him and Chin Meng-Wang gave me a heart attack every time they walked up to the mound.

Karns/Erik Davis added to the 40 man.  Danny Rosenbaum, Jeff Kobernus, Destin Hood left off according to Zuck.

If Hood is drafted, watch the forum explode.

Zuck adds that the Nats are banking on the others not being drafted because they would have to spend a full-year on another club's 25-man roster.

under the rule-5 draft rules, if someone is drafted they have to spend the entire season on a club's 25-man roster or they are returned to the team from which they are drafted.  So if someone grabs Hood, they would need to put him on the 25-man to keep him.

I see, so you want to be certaint that he's good and you can play him. Thanks.

Are rule-5 draft players drafted in the same way as the hs/college kids where worst team has first pick, or is it different?

Yes, it's the same way as a college draft.

A recent example of a Rule 5 pick was Jose Bautista by the Orioles... way back when... before he was Jose Bautista of today.

Once you pass, though, you no longer get to draft.
