In fairness, he praises the bat more than I thought, saying a 126 wRC+ is the average performance for age 31 (Morse's 2013) and says that is a reasonable expectation for Morse.  He does not drone on about the BB and K rate too much.

Dude, Cameron just ran an article where he puts Morse in the same table as Matt Holliday, Kevin Youkilis, and Josh Hamilton. Those aren't bad hitters to be compared to. He's basically predicting Bobby Abreu's career path, but without the walks.

We know Morse doesn't take many walks. We know he's not a good outfielder. What Cameron's saying shouldn't be surprising. And even if Morse is only a 2-win player, do you know how good a reliever has to be to be worth 2 wins?

Dude, two months ago he called him a platoon DH again. I'm not gonna read an entire article about Morse if it's written by him.

Edited to make me seem more like a dude who uses "dude."  Oddibe Young Again.

Carlos Guillen is another comp on that table, with more similar BB and K but 20 HR power rather than 30.

Nationals making moves
With the signing of Adam LaRoche to a two-year deal, the Nationals' lineup could look like this:

CF Denard Span
RF Jayson Werth
LF Bryce Harper
3B Ryan Zimmerman
1B Adam LaRoche
SS Ian Desmond
2B Danny Espinosa
C Kurt Suzuki/Wilson Ramos

Plus, they should have a really deep bench, regardless of whether they trade Michael Morse -- and it appears they will deal Morse, who has had three good offensive seasons: .871 OPS in 2010, .910 OPS in 2011 and .791 last year.

What can they expect for Morse? Probably not a lot. He is eligible for free agency next fall, which essentially makes him a one-year rental in 2013, and GMs don't have a lot of enthusiasm for giving up good prospects for a player in that situation. Some GMs say privately that while they like Morse, they can't see surrendering much, given his lack of a natural position and his lengthy injury history. And the Nationals will be hurt by the fact that there are similar players on the market, most notably Jason Kubel.

Is this pure speculation by Olney? If so, it's useless.   Or has he talked to someone inside?

Kubel is lefty so they're not exactly the same.  But point taken that there are similar players still out there.

Are the Indians still sour on Chris Perez?  I remember he criticized their ownership last year but he may have changed his mind about their commitment to winning with the Swisher signing.  But maybe the bridges have already burned?  They could definitely use another hitter.

CF Span  L
RF Werth  R
LF Harper  L
3B Zimmerman  R
1B LaRoche  L
SS Desmond  R
2B Espinosa  S
C   Ramozuki  R

and a bench of:
R  Morse 1B/OF
S  Lombo 2B/SS/3B/LF
L  Bernie OF
L  Tracy 1B/3B
NEWS ALERT: zimm_da_kid = Buster Olney

Davey Johnson said last year that he likes a lineup that alternates between left and right, deterring an opponent from bringing in a lefty specialist who stinks against right-handed batters.  (But Zim-with-1-N may have to amend his contract, if it requires that he always bats 3rd.) Davey also said in late December that he expected Morse to be traded, if LaRoche is signed.

Impressed that a professional is behaving professionally?  Pretty low bar.  He didn't get much love here when the team was awful, but I don't recall him ever saying or doing anything particularly egregious (though I'm sure you could find old quotes of me saying otherwise  )

There was a certain other journalist who behaved rather shockingly unprofessionally on one occasion, but I don't think that should be the standard against which composure is measured ;)

Apparently, some O's fans (O's message board) think we should add either Matt Purke, Matt Skole or Destin Hood in any deal with Morse.

 :smh:

They feel that would make a deal for someone like Arrieta "fair'.

I've seen this as well.  They are saying it would have to be one of the prospects in order to get Arrieta and Strop or Patton.  They seem to think that the Nats want a 6th starter and think Arrieta would be the guy.  He would add a righty to the pen and if someone gets hurt, he gets promoted.  I'd take Duke over Arrieta as a 6th starter, and I think an outside shot of signing Vazquez to a MiLB deal with a June 1 opt out makes much more sense.

I'm sorry to to anyone that has any feelings toward the O's, but I don't think the O's match up as well as some would think.  I still set my sights on Seattle.

What I'm getting is that O's fans really over value the hell out of their players.

I guess as a rule, most fans probably do overvalue their franchise's players.

But who really values Jake Arrieta or Brian Matusz as being a straight overpay by the O's for Morse?

I think people  on this board as a whole undervalue the players who have been around for a while- Detwiler as a lefty out of the pen, Morse for scraps

Morse getting moved for scraps isn't an undervaluation by people on this board... it's a likely reality. If you read most people's posts about Morse, they realize it's impossible to get fair market value for him... we're resigned to the fact that it'll likely be a small piece in return and not what a slugger could/might bring.

I doubt that Seattle would trade for Michael Morse, since the current GM there was the same guy who sent him to AAA in 2009 and then made the deal to trade him to us for Ryan Langerhans.  The GM is not going to admit that he was wrong about Morse by trading for him.
