Non-Nats Offseason news
« Topic Start: October 20, 2012, 04:21:02 PM »
3 way:

A's get Chris Young from Arizona
Arizona gets Heath Bell
Miami gets prospects.

I think I have this right...

clarkspencer ‏@clarkspencer
#marlins trade Heath Bell and cash to Arizona in 3-team deal with A's in which Miami receives minor league infielder Yordy Cabrera from Oak

Arizona Diamondbacks ‏@Dbacks
Team acquires INF Cliff Pennington and INF Yordy Cabrera from @Athletics for OF Chris Young @CY24_7 and cash considerations

Chris Young is a very good player.  Beane did well.  Probably makes Coco Crisp trade bait.

Smith, Gomes, Kottaras, and I think Barton are all not guaranteed for next year.  For now, they could go with their 3 best defenders among Crisp,  Cespedes, Young, and Reddick and have the other one DH.  I'm guessing Gomes can walk, Barton may be non-tendered, Kottaras is possibly tendered until they get a better option than a Kottaras / Norris
<---------
and Smith is likely tendered to be a back up.

Crisp wouldn't be a very good DH.  If I had to pick 5 guys, I'd pick Cespedes, Young, and Reddick as starters with Gomes and Smith as the backups.

You are right, but I kind of think he would be one of the defensive players.

It was the combination of Beane-love and "doing work".

You'd have to ask Linty about those qualifications.

I've been a fan of Beane for over ten years now. Even met him before.

How much of Bell's contract did Miami eat?

*EDIT* $8 million of the $21 million owed. $6.5 million over two years is still a lot for an aging reliever with heavily declining skills. Don't really like from Arizona's perspective, especially if they keep Putz and have Bell set up. That's a lot to pay him when they already have David Hernandez.

Marlins dump Bell and A's get 500k and Chris Young.

I'm going to go ahead and say that the D-Backs didn't win this one.  However, if Bell pitches well, Dbacks could be a threat. Bullpen was an issue for them last season.

Where's Putz going?

Bell can set up. Putz can close. If Bell finds his form, that's a strong back end of the pen. And they have a ton of starting pitching available. Pennington plays great defense at short, which is important given how many ground ball pitchers they have.

Arizona has a good GM. I think this trade may work out for them.

Sabathia heading to see Dr. Andrews for elbow issues per Brian Cashman (reported on MLB TV a few minutes ago).

It's supposedly a mild bone spur that won't be a big deal, but elbow issues are never good. CC has even said that he's worried about it.

Really?  This was a a terrible move for Arizona to me.  They're spending like $7 mil a year on Heath Bell.  And they have him for 2 years.  Would you sign Heath Bell, with the kind of year he just had, to that kind of a contract if he were a free agent?  If Rizzo did that for the Nats, I'd be pretty damn mad about it.

Plus he gave up a decent center fielder and only got in return a no-hit, all-glove shortstop - those guys are usually available every year in free agency.

They should have done a lot better in trading Chris Young.

Plus Arizona already has a great set-up man in David Hernandez.

So, essentially, they brought in Bell for the same role Ryan Mattheus or Christian Garcia serves, if he's just a bridge to Hernandez.  That's a lot for a middle guy, no matter how good he was.
