As I said in a thread earlier, the only thing that makes sense is an under the table deal that Edwin would take a 1-year deal with the Nats last season only if the Nats didn't impede his free agency hunt in the 2012 offseason (i.e. the Nats agreed to not tender him and discourage other teams with draft pick compensation).

What absolutely does NOT make sense is that Rizzo, who is proving himself to be one of the best GMs in MLB, was not smart enough to understand that not only was Edwin Jackson going to get a deal that was better than 1/$13.3 million, but that he was going to blow that out of the water.

He was ALWAYS going to get at least 3/$36. Every sane person knew that.

That said, I have no problem with Rizzo honoring his under-the-deal agreement. He probably has the same agreement in place with Dan Haren, and if that helps us get veteran pitchers at a good value and with minimal investment, I'm all for it.

the citizens of natstown blog speculates that Rizzo simply didn't want to take the chance that Jackson would accept our offer.  We had a .387 winning percentage with him on the mound.  Could he have taken a 1 year / $13.3 million deal to stay with us and have a chance to win again?

If there was a gentleman's agreement not to give Jackson the one year deal that would have qualified him for draft pick compensation, there might be similar agreement for Dan Haren.  It's not a bad way to do business if we keep getting these relatively high end pitchers on one year deals.

Yeah, and there is the complication that Edwin would not have got the offer he did if they had to give up a pick. So he might have felt more compelled to accept the qo.

If rizzo knew he didn't want him back, then not qualifying him was probably the prudent thing to do.

Liriano got 2 years and $14 mil from the Pirates.

Wow.  That is a huge bet for the Pirates given their limited budgets.  I kind of hate it for them but I don't know enough about the rest of their rotation for next year to really hate it.  Still, for a team with a low budget, they are risking flushing $7 mil down the toilet on a guy as inconsistent as Liriano.

So much for my idea that we offer him $3M to be a reliever.

That knuckler is just perfect. 80-something miles an hour. One rotation all the way to the plate.

Looks good!

Maybe donated to locks of love charity?   Personally long hair on ball players is over rated.

What the hell are the Dbacks doing?  Upton goes back on the trade block.  Hope the Barves don't get him too cheaply.

There's a reason I am on this forum.  It is incredibly hard to root for the dbacks these days.

I don't really care for long hair on players but Lincecum's 'do always looked unwashed and gross- probably just sweat but still yuck. Looks much more sensible (and to be honest attractive) with short hair.

More likely that Kubel is on the block. He's relatively cheap for his production, so they should not have much trouble dealing him.

@SteveGilbertMLB
#Dbacks GM Kevin Towers said there might not be another deal involving an outfielder after Cody Ross acquisition.

@SteveGilbertMLB
#Dbacks Towers says he has ownership backing to hang onto all outfielders and enter season with payroll in mid 90-million range.

@SteveGilbertMLB
#Dbacks Towers said Cody Ross could handle center on regular basis if they chose to play him there.

Kevin Towers has announced that they will not be trading any of their 5 outfielders, and that they should all expect equal playing time and platoon roles.

Kevin Towers is an idiot, and the Diamondbacks are one of the most backwards thinking organizations in all of professional sports.

I remember when Sands was first called up in 2011.

Every AB he was getting standing O's and "Jerry, Jerry" chants.

That didn't last long. Hope he works out for the Pirates, though.
