Rodney broke the ERA record, whereas Adam Dunn almost broke the strikeout record.

I actually think Alex Rios deserved it more than Dunn, but if not Rios, then Dunn.

Yeah, maybe a "most improved" vs. comeback award.  He hasn't had a sub 3.00 ERA since 2006.

Comeback player of the year is a bogus award.

Comeback player of the year is a bogus award.

Well yeah, but that doesn't mean we can't argue about who deserves it :D

Dunn got robbed.

Yeah I posted as much in the Adam Dunn Thread.  He got a Delivery Man award!  Fine let him win a Pitcher's award!  I think Dunn had the worst avg in the league last year.  I agree with CHIEF!  DUNN WAS ROBBED!

I also posted in the Dunn thread.  Unfortunately for Dunn, his batting average still stunk (.204), and his OPS was barely over .800.  This year really does not compare favorably to either of his years with the Nats in terms of offense.  He tailed off after the All Star game (.729 OPS).

Rodney had an amazing year by any traditional measure and most advanced ones. Personally, I view him as a never was, so I don't think it meets my idea of a "comeback."  Also, he might not even have been the best reliever in his own bullpen (Jake McGee has a case on FIP).

Oh, as for the "Delivery man of the year" award?  There's also a DH award - the Edgar Martinez Award.  Dunn does not get that, either.

Chief / Cal - I'm surprised you two just didn't make your best argument - WAR improvement.  Dunn went from -3.0 to 1.7, an improvement of 4.7 WAR, while Rodney went from -0.2 to 2.4.

The Sporting News award is not the same as the "official" MLB award. The Sporting News has been doing their "unofficial" award since the 1960's. The MLB one has only been around a few years, as blue pointed out, as a plug for Viagra.

That viagra tidbit combined with the fact that there are multiple versions of this award really make it seem...  well, stupid.

The comeback player of the year award is stupid any way you slice it.

I would prefer it if Viagra sponsored an award for a guy who kept a job in the majors but performed terribly.  That could call it the "Stay a Stiff" award.
