Kind of odd. He started this year for Dallas Baptist U. He posted a 5.40 ERA though the team has as a whole posted only a 4.93 ERA.

Jake Johansen's numbers in 2013: 88.1 IP 109 H 53 ER 26 BB 75 K 7 WP 7 HBP (7-6, 5.40 ERA)

I don't know anything about Dallas Baptist but college stats aren't the best way to judge. Terrible fields, possibly poor teammates, and aluminum bats can't really throw things out of whack.

He had a 3/1 k/bb ratio and walked 26 in 88 innings. That's better than 'can't throw strikes.'

He was also rated as the 56th best college player entering the year by one site, so there is some history of bing hyped. I definitely think there may be some thinking of spreading the cash around to get some talent with other picks.

They play in the WAC for baseball but will be moving to the Missouri Valley next season. They play a lot of Big 12 type teams in the midweek. They've been on the cusp of breaking through in recent years and made it to a super regional in 2011. It's a pretty good program, it's possible he's one of the two or three best players in program history though. They've only been at D1 for about a decade, maybe a little less.

Johansen doesn't overwhelm me but at least he has the raw stuff to potentially develop. I hate low ceiling picks early in the draft.

Glockypoo - it does not sound like he's low ceiling. It sounds more like the ceiling is pretty high but how long of a shot it is to hit it is the question. Clark thinks he's an easy fix. BA sounds like they are skeptical, but Law thinks he went in the right spot. If the ceiling is "just a reliever," then it is pretty low, but the Nats say he can start.

I think Glockypoo was saying he was happy that they didn't go with a low ceiling guy, as he had mentioned raw stuff to develop.

I wonder what rounds he was previously drafted in as I see it was his third time being drafted. Hopefully he will sign quickly.

Johansen is a big, fire-balling right-hander who works as a starter now for Dallas Baptist but will have to improve his off-speed offerings to remain one in pro ball.

He'll sit 95-96 mph and run the fastball as high as 99, getting a little downhill plane but otherwise not much life on the pitch. His curveball at 78-79 is big and sloppy, and his changeup at 88-89 is like a BP cutter, doing hitters something of a favor by backing off the big velocity. There's some effort in his delivery, including a little head-snap at release, and he turns his pitching elbow over very late after a long stride towards the plate, all of which would also point to a future in the bullpen. He's also had pretty lousy results for a guy throwing in the upper 90s, again because of the lack of a second pitch.

I'd send him out as a starter for a year, if only to develop at least one solid second pitch, but if I were betting money on his ultimate role, I'd guess he ends up a setup man or closer.

It's basically impossible to predict what this guy will become anyway. Guys that throw 99 always get a chance it seems.
