i think again and again Rizzo shows he won't pay a lot for free agents, Werth as the exception, he prefers to fill voids through trades, and for position players - he values defense above all else.

If we swing something for Shields, I'd bet on Morse for Shields straight-up, or maybe he'll throw in a AA/A prospect like Kobernus.  With Shields only having two years left, I don't think he'll give up much.  It would be crazy to part with Espinosa for two years of Shields.

You don't really think Morse would bring back Shields, do you???? We'd be lucky to get a reliever for Morse.

If James Shields was on the Minnesota Twins, that trade would work  :mg:

So apparently the nats are on Asdrubal Cabrera's no trade list.  Must be from before Desmond was good and we might have been interested in him.

No, they later said it was because those were 6 big market teams.

Or that he had absolutely no interest in playing in DC.

Trade Espi and Morse? NO!

Spend the money. Keep the players. Even though I hate strikeouts, and Espinosa's hitting reminds me of Don Lock (yes...look him up...and I suspect that Lock was more valuable), consider: if the Nats trade Espinosa and Lombo, Desmond, or Zimmerman get hurt, then who plays infield?

The Nats won games in 2012 both because they had no injuries to starting pitchers and because they could fill in for injured position players. Imagine that they've traded Espinosa and Desmond gets hurt. Would the replacement be next year's equivalent of Alex Cora? (No, Rendon will not be ready until 2014, assuming good progress. He hit .190 in a couple months of AA. He needs the work.)

IF the Nats sign LaRoche first, THEN (maybe) Morse is an extra big bat: Werth. Harper, Span, Shark, Moore, plus Morse?

Maybe the Nats should sign Edwin Jackson and quit worrying about the 5th starter? (Could they have kept Lannan's contract and traded him? He was a steady guy)

Maybe sign Burnett and stop worrying about lefty relief pitchers?

Is there a left long reliever much better than Gorzo?

Conclusion: Rizzo knows what he wants, and usually gets it. I'm just sayin'.

(Oh, and HTTR: beat the Giants!)

what would it take to get Matusz?  Would Morse do it?  He could be insurance for Gorz or an additional LRP.  Or, we could give him another shot as a SP.

I thought you guys would like to know that Jim Bowden is now reporting that we are in trade talks with the Rays involving Morse and Espinosa for a Starting pitcher

JIM BOWDEN ‏@JimBowdenESPNxm
James Loney and Rays close to one-year deal....Loney would replace Carlos Pena at 1B...also talking to Nats on starter for Morse & Espinosa

they could always have Loney and Morse platoon DH and 1st Base.

I can only begin to imagine a rotation with James Shields in it how awesome that would be.

Or just sign a pitcher instead of giving up talent to get talent.

Most of the rumors about the Nats this off-season are cringe-worthy.

Normally, Rizzo pulls off deals with no warning. So all of these Sheilds rumors seems like smoke and mirrors from Rizzo and/or the Rays. And personally, I'd rather have Hellickson than Shields.

For other teams, the Orioles are supposedly looking for a power bat. I'd trade Moore for Arrieta. Good K numbers and decent walk rate. His home run rate is a little high, but getting out of the Baltimore would do a lot to help that.

The D-backs keep trying to get Simmons from the Braves. I'm sure part of it stems from wanting to deal Justin Upton. However, they seem determined to add talent at the middle infield level. With that in mind, the D-Backs seem more than willing to deal Bauer. I could see an Espinosa for Bauer type of deal. Heck, given Bauer's history, I think Lombo and another piece could get it done.

If we get Shields I feel like we'd have to give up Morse, Espinosa and probably Hood/Taylor and maybe Solano/Leon.

Having said that, if they think Shields is worth it, I say go for it.

So do I. The Rays aren't stupid. Shields is quite valuable.

#Rays have agreed to terms with 1B James Loney, pending physical. 1st step in filling holes in lineup.

Not sure how Loney fills much of a hole in their lineup but whatev
