I hear he swings a big stick...

clubhouse discipline wouldn't be an issue if he were on the team.  he could mentor Harper.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20101018&content_id=15689838&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

Found this article on the relationship between Werth and Victorino (and Cody Ross, also a free agent).  They were all on the same AAA team when they were in the Dodgers' system.

I'd be fine with Victorino coming here for 2 or 3 years, maybe 8 mil per year.

I was on the Kubel Choo train earlier in the offseason. Kubel would be more of a power replacement but is viewed as a bad fielder.  Not the classic Rizzo beef.  Choo had a bad year in the field (first bad year).  Otherwise, he has been a good defensive player. His power is not that great, but he is a terrific OBP guy.  He could go into the #2 slot and allow you to drop Bryce down to 4th or 5th.

I agree with this. It's extremely wishful thinking but I would love Choo here. And it's not like he's Lombardozzi with his power contributions; he'll give you 15-20 homers and about infinity doubles. That's pretty solid for a 1-2 hitter.

Pulled a little of the Melky, Gomes and LaHair discussions out of this thread and into the non-nats offseason moves thread in the out of town scoreboard.  Also moved the AlGo to the cubbies post to the former nats news thread.

This year, I am thankful for my moderating superpowers!

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/royals-willing-to-part-with-top-prospect-to-land-frontline-starting-pitcher-015456742.html

Quote from: Jeff Passan
Teams looking for a center fielder in the trade market are finding it stagnant like free agency, with the price in prospects just as prohibitive as that in money.
After years of waiting for Dexter Fowler to develop, Colorado is using his emergence to ask for a huge return – "Absurd," one executive mused – in a deal for him. Minnesota has taken the same tack with Denard Span, and even with its outfield surplus, Arizona has held tight onto Gerardo Parra, who won a Gold Glove in left but could play center.
The most surprising part: Center field actually looks like a buyer's market. While another executive warned "it will shake out," the number of center fielders ostensibly available – the three aforementioned, Michael Bourn, B.J. Upton, Angel Pagan and Shane Victorino in free agency, plus Curtis Granderson for teams that don't necessarily want a multiyear commitment – doesn't exactly dovetail with the number of teams that need a center fielder.

This was interesting.  Rockies asking a lot for Fowler (who some people don't want at all and consider a product of Coors Field and others consider a good player with some upside left).  Also mentions Curtis Granderson could be available.  I would gladly take him here to play in left field for a year.

I'm not sure that we'd target him/Bourne if Laroche leaves, but I don't like seeing players fly off the board while we're negotiating.

Boz, after talking to Rizzo and Davey, now thinks we won't do much of anything this offseason other than get a bullpen piece or two and bring in a 5th starter.

Morse to 1B, Moore in LF.  Werth bats leadoff, Espinosa/Lombo at 2b and batting second, and Harper bats cleanup.

If that 5th starter is Dempster, that'd be fine, I guess.  As long as the young guys really produce.  Otherwise, this will have been a missed opportunity.

If that is the case then that means that Davey is banking on significant contributions from rendon and/or goodwin next year.

I'd be completely OK with the quiet offseason thing if we resign LaRoche, but that doesn't seem like a likely thing now.

Yeah, it comes down to how well Morse and Moore perform.  If they both put up strong offensive numbers with 30 homers each, then it will have been the right call - especially if it take 4 years to sign LaRoche.  Even 3 years, I'm on the fence.

I would like to get Greinke since we don't have any young pitchers who look ready to contribute in the next year or two.  He's young and durable and has put up very good numbers.  But if they think giving out another $100+ mil contract will keep them from re-signing JZ, Stras, and the rest, then forget it.  Give Dempster 2 years and 25 mil.

I'm going to keep telling myself that GMs never reveal their true intentions because I really don't want to believe that the plan is to drop payroll.

it also means Rizzo doesn't want to over-pay or get stuck with older guys on 3 and 4 year deals.  It sounds like, if the reporting is believable, that Rizzo doesn't want to go any further than 2 years with LaRoche.

I'd like to keep LaRoche, but I'm hopeful that Moore can replace quite a bit of that pop.  And as you note, we'll have the flexibility to bring up Rendon and Goodwin in 2013.
