So - Nick Swisher for first base.  Has that horse been beaten to death already?  He's only about a year younger than LaRoche and his defense is only so-so.  But he gets on base more and I prefer his bat, even though the numbers are pretty close.  Would probably take something like 4 years and 60 mil to sign him.

Why sign Swisher when you can get LaRoche for cheaper and less years?

1:25pm: Alderson acknowledged the trade talks and said he doesn't expect them to accelerate during the GM Meetings according to Martino, who heard from other executives that talks are just preliminary (Twitter link). Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter) that the Mets seek outfield and catcher help in a deal. They still haven't ruled out an extension either.
 
11:51am: Andy Martino of The New York Daily News says there is still "healthy internal debate" about Dickey within the organization and that nothing is final (Twitter links). They could look to act quickly if progress towards a contract extension is made, however.
 
11:34am: The Mets are showing little interest in signing R.A. Dickey to an extension and are discussing the knuckleballer in trades, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Earlier this morning Joel Sherman of The New York Post reported that there is still a significant gap in contract talks, so the team started to gauge trade interest.

I thought this board would be more interested in Bourn - I definitely am, but not at 100m

I don't care about the dollar amount (it's not my money); it's the years that concern me. It would essentially be another Werth deal if not worse as all of Bourn's value comes from his speed which is typically one of the first things to deteriorate as a player ages.

Yes.  Lannan is a more then acceptable #5.  If one of 1-4 goes down for the year, then we get someone else through trade.

I think more people would be had we not seen Harper turn into a very good CF and the Werth-Harper combo at the top of the lineup be as good as it was. But both of those things are true, so the need for Bourn is less than it was thought to be back in the middle of the season.
