Baseball reference has it as a team option.

I'm willing to believe he can produce next season, but I'm skeptical after that

kilgore has it as mutual from when it was signed.

At this point, I'd offer him two years, more than that, and I'd prefer to stick with Moore or Morse and spend the money on an upgrade in Left Field

I'm not seeing the need for another starting pitcher.  Plus I would like to give Lannan the chance as the #5.  If he doesn't work out it's not hard to trade midseason for a #5.

The Morse question really vexes me.  As you can guess from my name, he's my favorite Nat.  But I can see how with his bad D he'd make a much better DH in the AL than anything over here.  Otoh, he actually plays a pretty decent 1B (his main defensive liability is his terrible speed which isn't a huge issue at 1st).  It's not clear to me LaRoche>Morse at first, but probably we should only be keeping one of them.

Well, I wouldn't say we "need" another starting pitcher but I think/hope we will look to add another one. It doesn't harm us by adding a potential stud to the rotation via Free Agency since it'll only make us that much better on the 5th day. I mean:

Strasburg
Greinke/Haren/Shields
Gio
Zimmermann
Detwiler

Zimmermann would be considered the best #4 pitcher in history![mf]

Morse plus Moore plus Lombardozzi plus maybe something else for a cost-controlled starting pitcher (James Shields?).  Then sign an outfielder to play CF and a utility infielder.  And sign a good relief pitcher or two and extend JZ.  Call it an offseason.

If we're emptying the farm, I'd rather do it for a solid high average contact hitter in LF or at 2b

I'm worried signing a big FA to be our 3rd or 4th best starter when we already have a stud rotation, will not help all that much this year, and will hurt in just a few years when we need to be spending big bucks jsut to keep the guys we currently have on the team.

But that's unless the contract is, somehow, heavily backloaded. I don't see how money/salary now, will affect such negotiations in the future. It's not like income suddenly stops once we sign one of these guys.

If the Rays are serious about a sub 50 million payroll, I think we should strongly push for Price. We have enough to force them to make a hard choice. If they don't want to, okay, we scale back and nab Shields. I'm not willing to flush money away on Grienke or Haren. I don't think Grienke will want to come here anyway.

I would definitely take Shields over Haren. I think with the 4 that have been talked about, I'd go with this: Price -> Greinke -> Shields -> Haren.

Mike has to re-think his bullpen after the Sept/october meltdowns.  Don't know about him, but I don't trust anyone we have right now to shut things down 7 through 9.  otoh, maybe what we have is what most teams have...inconsistently good talent there. But definitely need a closer you can trust
in big games.

Why would we go hard for another starter and not another batter? Strasburg should be available the whole year next year and we're dropping our worst playoff starter out of the rotation, meanwhile we only put up a decent run total once in the playoffs and had a streaky offense all year

Who and Where would they go? I mean I'm all for improving the lineup, but the only spots I can see are LF (if Morse goes or moves to 1B) or 2B (if we somehow trade Espinosa away). We're going to, hopefully, have a full season of Ramos who I believe has a better bat than Suzuki (worse defense though). I wouldn't mind a pickup of Bourn or one of the Upton brothers, but I could easily see Rizzo and co. be fine with keeping the lineup as is... same with the rotation actually.

does Ramos cure anything? I think overall, the offense is far more of a problem than the pitching, yes we gave up a bunch of runs in two games in the post season, but we also got blanked. I would be all for upgrading LF to a traditional high average slugger

I really don't know what better 2B option is out there over Espinosa.

2nd highest scoring offense in Washington history. Next year we get Harper for a full season. Need to keep Zimmerman and Morse healthy.

Jeremy Affledt wouldn't be a bad pickup

I'm not seeing where we can improve without a pretty big overhaul of the roster.

Uehara is money out of the pen.  Affeldt would be a good replacement for burnett.  shields would be great, but the rays will need to deal price at some point because they simply can't afford him and why not this offseason coming off a cy young worthy season?

The new network deals ensure that Tampa will have the money to sign Price.

I have no idea if they will, but to state they can't afford him isn't correct.

Like many posters here have suggested this is a really good team so I wouldn't make too many changes.

1.Resign LaRoche to a 2 year deal with an option for a third.
2. Let Jackson go and go hard after Greinke/Haren/Trade for Price
3. Trade Morse for prospects.
4. Sign Bourn/Upton.
5. Extensions for Zimmermann and Desmond.
6. Sign a veteran back end reliever Madson/Broxton

This is my dream offseason but really unlikely to happen. I can completely see the Nats not doing much at all and wait to see some of the young studs develop like Rendon/Meyer/Goodwin, all of which I expect to called up at some point next year if they are not traded. Either route is fine with me though. Expecting another 95+ win season in 2013

I doubt Laroche goes for a two year extension. He's probably looking to get more long term security. Most of that sounds good but I would hold off on a Desmond extension.

When does Desmond go into arbitration? This off-season?
