That 1 WAR improvement in 2012 over ALR would have been so worth the extra $11MM last year and the remaining 8 years and $190+MM he's owed.  It kept us from the best record in baseball.

Oh, wait.

ALR had a career year. Fielder had a down year. I'm pretty sure over the course of the next two seasons, Fielder will be subtantially better than Laroche.

JCA guess you woke up on the wrong side of the bed... But I said nothing of ALR. Simply stated Prince would have done great here as he did in Detroit.

this is what happens when there is no baseball to talk- nothing new with ALR, every angle already beaten to death. The rest of the roster is basically complete with the exception of bullpen filler (which we seem to be elevating to middle of the order bat in importance as time goes on), and pitchers and catchers aren't reporting for another month

I wish Rizzo would give LaRoche a deadline.

I don't know if demands on ALR would work in the Nats favor, right now.

I'm past caring-I'm sure Rizzo has given him a price he thinks is fair, but that price is probably lower than what LaRoche thinks he's worth (and with Morse and Moore and a draft pick factoring in, it should be lower than his value to a team without other options)- if he takes it fine, if not ok. It's not like him not signing is precluding us from going after other first basemen- Rizzo is in a position where if LaRoche says no there is no need to back fill, so why scramble for a deal?

Prince would have beaten up Kozma after that game and that would have made me feel better.

How 'bout over the course of the next 8 seasons?

I don't follow here.  Fielder wRC+ last year was 153.  Same as it was when he hit 50 HR.  He plays in a MUCH bigger park so the homers come down but his average is higher, he walks more than he strikes out and RBI totals are lower because he is hitting behind Miggy.  He is better than LaRoche bar none and would have been a SS in the NL had he come here.

Not really saying you are wrong about the ALR vs. Fielder argument, but just saying that Fielder did not have a down year by any means.  WAR is a lame stat that puts some stupid value on stats that don't really make tons of sense like UZR and BSR and other evaluated statistics over measurable statistics.

I wanted Prince and I still wish we signed him.  I don't care if he is a loaf at 1st base and would need 8 more years of loafing there.  It's a position that requires the LEAST amount of defense on the field and the main idea is to SLUG THE EVERY LIVING HECK out of the ball.  Fielder does that better than ALR and right now, better than any other NL 1st baseman.  I suspect that Fielder will still slug the heck out of the ball at 36 so I would have offered all that cash.

Fielder over ALR for 8 seasons?  Surely you jest because ALR won't be in baseball in 8 seasons and Fielder will still probably bop out 30 homers.  I only expect his K rate to increase as his swing slows.  He still has one heck of an eye so his OBP will still be in the .360-.380 range.

Fielder over anyone else in 8 years with all the dough?  I still take it with the afore mentioned reasons.  He is a first baseman and unless you are Bill Buckner, I doubt he would "cost" a game for the team.

I just dont care on laroche either way- if he doesn't sign, ok, if he signs the day before spring training, that's fine too

Except the only way you could get Fielder was with a 9 year, $214MM contract.  The idea that you could have signed him for 3 years is before 2012 is unreasonable.

Well if the Lerners would stop being so cheap .....

Trade for Stanton, trade Morse, put Werth at first. Great outfield, tons of power, best team in baseball for the next 5+ years. Multiple chamipionships. Trade Harper and Stanton in their last years, reload, be competitive two years after that.

I had a great night's sleep and no joint issues when I woke up.  I feel like I'm 45 again!

Simply put, it would have been a bad signing to have outbid Detroit for Prine last year.  While he is clearly better than ALR, and would have locked down the position for the next 8 or 9 years, it would have only resulted in a marginal improvement to last year's team.  Going forward, the team can spend the $200MM extra it would have cost for Prince on more valuable things.

trading for Stanton would likely mean giving up JZ or Gio, plus Rendon, plus another high minor leaguer (Skole?).  I don't see it happening.

Quit being a little girl. They don't want MLB ready talent. They want minor league studs. Rendon, Goodwin at the break after they're playing like rockstars, plus an odd end or two.

You're 100% correct on how the contract could have potentially been a negative after all is said and done... but that wasn't what anyone was discussing. Linty just responded to CALSGR8 that having Fielder last year would have been just as good as ALR last year.

Unless I can't read... which happens a lot.

No offense, but that is no where near enough to land Stanton.  They need front line pitching as well as many position players.  It would have to be Giolito, Rendon, Goodwin and Lombo/Moore.
