Holy crap .... just pay that man his money [/Malcovich]

Anyway, if Tommy Hanson can get Jordan Walden, Morse can get just as much. Even for a year.

rosenthal says the Phillies are offering Pagan a 4 year deal.

This is why Mike Rizzo is GM of the year.

I'd like to sign Daniel Schlereth to a minor league deal. Dealt with shoulder tendonitis all season but before that showed some promise.

for sure.  The Rays are too good of a fit to not be heavily pursued by rizzo.  They  have a load of young pitchers like McGee, Davis, Archer, cobb, and others.  I'm sure we could get one of them.

I don't think Hanson is that great.  He's been trending downward for a while and already has a funky pitching motion.  Honestly I wouldn't be surprised at all if we've already seen the best out of Hanson.

I was very impressed with Rosenthal out of the Cards pen.  If Morse can net a young guy like that with many years of team control at low cost, that would be worth it.

Ok, with Gorz dropped we have no lefties in our bullpen except for Zach Duke. Do you think we'll resign Mike Gonzalez or Sean Burnett? How many FA lefty relievers are there?

Current bullpen off the top of my head: Tyler Clippard (R), Drew Storen (R), Craig Stammen (R), Christian Garcia (R), Zack Duke (L), Ryan Mattheus (R)

Duke is a free agent but they are going to try to resign him. So the Nats actually have no lefties.

I think we almost have to re-sign Sean Burnett at this point.  He'll be pricey but we have the money and definitely have the need.

When people talk about Boston as a Morse destination, the one thing the Red Sox have in surplus that the Nats might want is LH relief.  They have Andrew Miller, who was pretty effective last year, Franklin Morales, who could spot start, and Craig Breslow.  They also did not offer arbitration to Rich Hill, who was a good loogy for them but he missed a lot of time last year due to injury.  He came back at the end of the year, I think.

I don't Fenway is a great park for Morse because he loses his ability to reach the fence in right center, but I could easily see the Red Sox looking for a one year fix at first while they figure out if Bogaerts can stay at SS or must move to 3d (moving Middlebrooks to 1st).

Olney says the Rays and David Price are far apart in extension talks.  Rendon, Karns and Morse for Price?

Quote from: Adam Berry
Adam LaRoche, in Orlando: "I've made it as clear as I can that I want to come back. ... I'm not looking for a record deal by any means. Let's get something fair and let's go. I want to finish up in D.C." He wants a three-year deal. #Nats want him for two years.
Basically it's in Rizzo's hands. If he really wants him back all he has to do is give him the third year.

People decide to not purchased things they really wanted because it cost more than they are willing to pay.  That happens all the time.

Go 2 years with a team option for the third year. Don't give in, Mike.

Don't think Adam would be at Davey's tournament if he didn't want to re-sign, BADLY.  But Rizzo is being so stubborn with his two years that he's going to drive ALR elsewhere.  Like Davey says, "Get together!"  I mean, how creative do you have to be to work out a 3rd year option?

Meanwhile, LaRoche knows that Rizzo can't trade Morse until he (ALR) makes a decision. Rizzo is over the barrel.

At this point I'd like to see this next year:

1.  CF - Span - L
2.  LF - Werth - R
3.  RF - Harper - L
4.  3B - Zimmerman - R
5.  1B - LaRoche - L
6.  SS - Desmond - R
7.  2B - Espinosa - S
8.  C - Ramozuki - R
9.  P

SP - Strasburg (R), Gio (L), Greinke (R), Zimmermann (R), Detwiler (L)
RP - Storen (CL-R), Garcia (SU-R), Clippard (R), Burnett (L), Mattheus (R), Stammen (R), Duke (L)

Bench - Ramozuki (R), Lombo (S), Moore (R), Bernadina (L), Tracy (L)

This scenario means Burnett returns and Duke takes Gorzy's now vacant spot.  Greinke is signed and so is LaRoche.  Morse is traded for a few prospect arms likely to the Rays.  H-Rod gets one more chance in ST to make the squad.  If he makes it, likely Mattheus is sent to AAA (I think he has one option left).

I MIGHT agree with you if he didn't have Moore as an insurance policy.  That dude's gonna be a masher sooner rather than later and with experience all over the field, it wouldn't be a huge issue if they had to play him at 1B next year (and beyond, IMO).  Rizzo's not over any barrels.  He's not going to cave on what he thinks is the best move for this team.

I bet Rizz is finding the right suitor for Morse right now.  I don't think it's a secret that if the Nats go to the third year for LaRoche, he re-signs here.  I doubt he really wants to go anywhere else.  Rizz doesn't want to get a bad package back for Morse and he probably loses leverage if he signs ALR first.

What are the years we will have to shell out money to resign JZim, Stras and Harper? Is it '13, '14 and '15 respectively?

'15,'16 and '18 I think.  Harper might be '17 though as I don't think he is a Super Two.

The ONLY quibbles I have with this post (I agree on Duke, for example) are that I think it's okay to find a pitcher who's not Greinke - be it Anibal, McCarthy, or someone else - and I suspect we see Morse traded to fill the lefty reliever hole. Although a AA starter as a throw-in for Morse would be very welcome, to help us stock back up.

Anibal Sanchez fits the Rizzo mold, I think. Like Edwin Jackson, he's been to a World Series; like Edwin Jackson, he's thrown a no-hitter.
