Hah, agreed.  A lot of people suddenly hate the Cardinals and their fans, but we would be creaming our jeans if we were in their position right now.

I'd still be underwhelmed if they win it because they've done it so much, and they just did last year.

Agreed.  I don't know how the Cardinals barely sneak into the playoffs (thanks to the Braves) two years in a row and do what they do.

I've seen the word "choke" floating around in the forum lately.

This is an interesting article called "The Art of Failure".

http://www.gladwell.com/2000/2000_08_21_a_choking.html

I don't think anyone choked. I think Davey panicked - and maybe Storen panicked. Panic is characterized as failure due to not seeing the obvious, or relying on just a few things, not seeing the big picture, when the crap starts hitting the fan.

It's probably a 15 minute article, but it's a fascinating essay. Read it instead of watching the NLCS. :)

If any other team had lost in the exact same fashion, say the phillies, mets or braves, people here would have no problem dubbing it an " epic choke". But I do think that Davey Johnson seemed asleep at the wheel. Storen choked. He was terrified of the strike zone at the most crucial time. Hopefully he'll learn from it and the next time he's in that same situation for the Nats he'll be lights out.

what happened fits the definition of choke pretty well

Quote
In sports, a "choke" is the failure of an athlete or an athletic team to win a game or tournament when the player or team had been strongly favored to win or had squandered a large lead in the late stages of the event.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choke_(sports)

it may be other things as well, but choke accurately describes the game

That Wikipedia definition of choking describes a result. Gladwell's essay talks about the causes of athletic failure and differentiates between choking and panicking. Choking is thinking too much when you should be relying on your "muscle memory", to your detriment. Panicking is not thinking enough, getting tunnel-vision, not paying attention to obvious data.

Gladwell describes it better.

 It's interesting and worth a read.

There should be a maximum education and IQ limit for professional ballplayers.  Dan Uggla never chokes.  He needs a crib sheet to work hotel elevator buttons, but meh, that's what interns are for.

I pray that the cards choke. And I don't mean that in a figurative sense either.... Like I seriously hope they all choke on their dinners and die.

I have been doing just that since last week. We're so bad we're watching a Nats rerun (aka classic). Weird to be watching Riggleman--that alone makes me thankful for 2012.

The loss in the NLDS sucks even more when realizing our road to a championship this year would have been SF Giants in NLCS and Detriot in the World Series.  Obviously they are good teams, they made the playoffs, but I gotta this St. Louis is the hardest playoff matchup out of those 3 teams.

Guess this is as good as anyplace: I can't stop looking at the game 7 score tonight again and again.  Man, the Nats could've been the one grabbing the pennant at home tonight...    :smh: :smh: :smh: :smh:

Espinosa and Duke have no business playing on this team right now.
