Even with today's loss, we won the season series against the Cards.

Win 2 against the Phils and we win that series too.

I'll settle for one...preferably tomorrow...

Kinda worried about clinching now. I really hope they don't put in Wang haphazardly.

This just in, Justin Bieber saw today's game and this was his reaction when he realized Davey left Wang in to hit.

You're bound to eventually end up with a little crap if you always leave Wang in too long.

What's the season series between Nats and Braves?

10-8 Nats (but 4-6 since All-Star break).

What's the season series between Nats and Braves?

vs ATL   10   8   84   69   .556 (according to Baseball Ref)

Why? STL announcers believe that if the Nats and Braves tie, division goes to team with best head-to-head. Same if LAD and STL tie for second WC spot.

Is that true?

No...one game playoff...

MLB.COM says, at length, that there will be a one-game playoff...I think. Previous rule, under the one-WC system, was head-to-head. Here's the "clear" explanation:

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120907&content_id=38029316&vkey=news_mlb_nd&c_id=mlb

Conclusion: Nats must win another game!!!!

I thought so...then thought something awful could happen. However, this team bounces back. Could have won today with first-rate pitching. Lannan is steady. Gio is spectacular. Jackson can look awful one game and then, when the pressure is on, pitch a shutout. In fact, if anybody on this team could throw a no-hitter, I'd guess Jackson.

(Incidentally, no Washington pitcher has thrown a no-hitter since a guy we've forgotten did it around 1930. Walter Johnson did it once, and hurt his arm that same year. Bosman threw one-hitters a few times in 1969 - 71, and I saw Pascual twice take no-hitters into the 8th. Don't know if the Expos ever had a no-hitter. Given the way pitchers are handled today, maybe we'll never see one.)

I've learned to trust Davey. He's been right so many times that he can be compared with Clark Griffith, Bucky Harris, and Joe Cronin...

More like he throws in the towel.  These players deserve better than that.

Dennis Martinez threw a perfect game against the Dodgers in 1991.

Bill Stoneman threw one in their first season in 1969.

No, it doesn't mean he quits, it means he's not going to expend a huge amount of energy and his best bullets on a wing and a prayer.  We've seen that his "B" group can be capable that he can double back with his top guys if he needs to.

To quote Herm Edwards:  "You play to win the game..."

Davey didn't do that when he brougth in Wang, and he certainly didn't do that when he let Wang hit so that he could stay in the game.

Again, this isn't a football season.  Football mentality will lose you games when applied to baseball, especially in the regular season.

We're not playing to win the game right now, we're playing to give ourselves the best opportunity for success in the post season.  And going max effort and using all your bullets on a game like today's isn't necessarily the best way to do that.  If the pen and bench guys can rally and pull one out of the fire, cool, but going crazy and blowing through your pen down 7-0 isn't the best way to do that.

It was 7-4 at the time. Guy on base. Cards starter struggling to get the final out. And he lets Wang bat.

That is surrendering.

Our best opportunity is winning the division and not playing in a one-game wild card game.
