« Topic Start: September 07, 2012, 04:18:10 PM »
I'm going to call it and say this is a playoff team. No 07 Mets in this bunch. What should be the 25 man roster for the playoffs?

Werth
Harper/Moore platoon
Zim
Morse
LaRoche
Desmond
Espinosa
Suzuki

Flores
Bernadina
Lombardozzi
Tracy
Brown

JZ
Gio
Jackson
Detwiler

Garcia
Gonzalez
Mattheus
Burnett
Stammen
Clippard
Storen

I like this Garcia kid, limited sample size and all.

EDIT: but no Gorzelanny? Tough call there.

Somehow I didn't. I just looked at the bench.

Who's the long relief guy in the bullpen if there is no Gorzelanny? Who could pitch for 5 innings if a starter gets knocked out early?

Stammen, I guess. I'd prefer Lannan to Gorzelanny honestly but Gorzy was here all year being OK.

Looking at the various teams splits against rhp vs lhp, I think you go with 3 lefties against the Braves, and try to find a third rightie against the Cards, Giants or Dodgers (or at least not go with Gio in game 1 against those teams).  Same goes with Gorz vs Garcia.

I think Gorz makes it over Brown.  I don't see CB making the playoff roster.

Do you go 14 position players, 4 starters, and a 7 man bullpen, or do you go with 13 position players, 4 starters, and an 8 man bullpen?

I'd expect DeRosa to make it over Brown if they go with 14 position players.  It's not like we'd use Flores to pinch hit (if we wanted to, then Leon is in the mix ahead of Brown).  The regular bench has 2 reliable LH bench guys in Tracy and Bernie, a switch hitter who is better against lefties in Lombo, a catcher who will be glued to the bench, and just one righty bat in Moore.  To me, it looks like a multi-position veteran who bats righty would be the extra guy added, not a 6 or 7th outfielder.

I think Garcia is going to be on an audition for the role of an extra bullpen arm if they go with 8 relievers.  The other thing to look for is whether Lannan pushes Gorzo off the roster.  Those 3 are in competition for 1 or 2 bullpen slots.

And I don't see what he adds if he's on it.  Bernie is the speedy pinch runner, Moore is righty pop off the bench.  Gorz is a lock, and I think Lannan may make it over Garcia.

I'm telling you Garcia is awesome.  A million times better than HRod ... plus we didn't have to give up Josh Willingham for him.

Not the best effort on that roster.

You don't get to just take any 25 guys and put them on the playoff roster.

You need to start with who was on the 25 man roster on Aug 31, and you can make replacements for disabled players. So, Gorzo makes the playoffs, Stras does not. Brown does not, but Moore does. Maybe we can keep Garcia for Stras or Burnett.

You have to be on the Roster Aug 31 to be on the playoff roster unless you have an injury.

Zuckerman paints a slightly different picture.  Don't know if he's right or not, I thought more like you...

Mark Zuckerman ‏@MarkZuckerman
Yes, he is. Anybody in organization on Aug. 31 is eligible. RT @GrahamArmstrong he's not eligible

Garcia has pitched well and all, but I don't want a guy with virtually zero MLB experience on the playoff roster.  Same goes for Corey Brown.  Take those two off, put Gorzo and Lannan in.   Especially with the way Suzuki has been hitting lately I think we only need 13 position players.  If Suzuki cools off then I see an argument for another bench bat at the cost of a reliever.

Or screw it put Stras on the roster as a bench bat and in case we need an arm if a game goes 15 innings plus.  Perfect Hollywood script right there...

Give me the talent.  Francisco Rodriguez only had 5 appearances in 2002 and was indispensable for the Angels in that post season.

Count me in the 'Garcia needs to be on the roster' camp.  That guy was impressive last night.  I'd rather have him than Gorzelanny.  Lannan can fill the lefty long relief role.

Burnett is hurting, Stammen and Clippard have pitched a ton of innings, Storen is still rounding into form after the long layoff - the bullpen can use as many quality arms as they can get.
