Avatar with 1924 throw-back uniform reminds me of Nationals trivia found in Wrecking Crew of '33. Why was that uniform so plain? Roll ahead nine years and the Nationals/Senators/Griffmen wore the same uniform, with red and blue sox, and blue hats...without the 'W'

Why?

Because Clark Griffith was scrimping. He ordered the team -- probably one of his Robertson nephews -- to make sure that each uniform cost no more than $20. They had numbers by 1933, so they could not afford 'W's on the caps.

In case you're wondering, Moe Berg wore number 10 that year.

The Braves are further being us, now than they were behind the Phillies, on this day last year.

Tracking down the all-time Washington teams:

2012: August 21: 77 - 46
1933: August 20: 77 - 38
1925: August 28: 77 - 45

This team has caught the 1925 team, one of the all-time best with Bucky Harris, Walter Johnson, Joe Judge, Sam Rice, Goose Goslin.
This team is about four games behind the 1933 team, Joe Cronin's "wrecking crew" that demolished the Ruth/Gehrig Yankees

The bull.pen has had some rest. Detwiler pitches and the Braves had trouble with Detwiler last time. I want a win.

Nice :w: Just five more to have a :w: inning season. Only 40 games left in regular season, we should win about half of those so still on track for 90some wins (or very close)

Half? I would expect better than that at this point.

Loved this game tonight, rain delay and all.  First of all - Stephen Strasburg was simply sensational.  Second of all, Flores' home run was a delightful surprise and came at the best time with two men on base.  Finally - the crowd.  They were so into the game cheering at every appropriate moment - showing their Natitude to the n'th degree.  In the ninth inning, some Brave fans started their stupid chant, at which point, Nat fans shouted them down so that you could no longer hear them.  I don't think teams can come into our stadium anymore and try to takeover.  Those days are gone!

Comparative dates on which the Nationals notched their 77th win, each season:

2012 - 21st August (123rd match of season)
2005 - 16th September (148th match)
2011 - 24th September (157th match)
---
2007 - finished 73-89
2006 - finished 71-91
2010 - finished 69-93
2008 - finished 59-102
2009 - finished 59-103

---

THIS DAY WITH THE '05 OVERACHIEVERS: Sunday 21st August 2005 saw the Nats salvage a win in the Mets series and bring the interminable road trip to a finish - 7-4 in 10 innings...record now 65-59...http://espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=250821121

---

The Nationals' winningest month ever was June 2005 when they went 20-6...with last night's result they are 16-5 in August 2012. They only need to win 5 of their remaining 8 matches this month to post their winningest month ever.

Last night was the smallest Braves turn-out I've ever seen at Nats Park - in the 300's they were few and far between.

The 33,888 attendance for last night was our second-best Tuesday of the season, trailing only the Giants appearance the day before the Fourth of July (36,985).
