Laptop died after 12 years
« Topic Start: August 11, 2012, 02:48:15 PM »
My 2002 Toshiba Satellite laptop's socket that connects to the electric plug/recharger broke off while the laptop was in the trunk of a car.  It's not worth the $200 estimated repair, since it has 1 GB memory, 40 GB storage and a Pentium processor.
 :(
I'm willing to adopt a used laptop or desktop that's useable on the Internet, if anyone has one collecting dust.

I looked at the cheaper ones available at Micro Center in Rockville:
1) ASUS X54C-RB01 $259.99 Intel Celeron B820 2 GB DDR3 320GB HD, WIN 7 Premium, DVD+-RW DL Drive. I read that Celeron only has 66% of the cache and other limitations.

2) Acer Aspire E1-571-6650 $349.99 Intel i3-2370M, 4 GB DDR3 memory, 500 GB Hard Drive Windows 7 Premium, DVD+-RW DL Drive - This sounds like the best bargain, for the price. Agree?

3) ASUS X54C-MS91 $299.99 Intel Pentium B960 processor, 4 GB DDR3 Memory, 320 GB hard drive, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, DVD+-RW DL Drive, 15.6"

4)Toshiba Satellite L755-S5167 $499.99 Intel Core i5-2450 processor, 4 GB DDR3 Memory, 640 GB hard drive, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, DVD+-R/RW DL Drive, 15.6"

5) ASUS X73E-GS32 $549.99  Intel Core i3-2350 processor, 6 GB DDR3 Memory, 500 GB hard drive, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, Combo Blue-Ray & DVD+-R/RW DL Drive, 17.3"

FREE computers are more than welcome... throwing this ball up and down, up & down doesn't bring in much money.

I inherited my son's Toshiba laptop (2007) in 2009 when he went to college.   Condolences   ....

That looks like my old Packard Bell 486 DX120.  Pumping the bellows was pretty good exercise...

Good luck!  I don't have anything to offer :( might want to look at netbooks if you are looking for something cheaper but obviously they will probably not last as long as your old laptop has.

Might want to check Craigslist for old laptops. I do not think you will find any free laptops but you might find one for under $100 that may be slow but useable.

I know I'll be prowling craigslist so I can have a TV to watch Nats games.

Acer is the only company I will buy from at this point. Samsung, Dell, Gateway, and the rest can go to hell and die. My Acer Aspire One is amazing.

By the way, I did change my laptop DC socket myself on my old Sony Vaio, it was really easy to do. The part was like 50 bucks.

Yes, the Amazon.com price is $100 more than Micro Center in Rockville MD.  They had the same model for $379 in April or July.

Don't toss it.  I had a similar problem.  It made a beep but did start after 20 minutes or one hour.

Freddie Flores at Micro Center's customer service section told me to get a $7 inland Pro USB 2.0 HDD Enclosure, so I can transfer the old hard disk files to another computer.  (Another rep said it would cost &75 for them to do it.) He kindly removed my old hard disk from my laptop and assembled it for me.

Where do you get the part, and don't you have to solder it?

Mine doesn't do a thing.   It goes to the prompt of either "start normally" or "run a scan" (paraphrase).    "Start normally" doesn't do a thing and always takes me to the "run a scan" option.   That invariably ends with a request for discs.    I'll try it again and see what happens but I don't think there's an IT Lazarus moment in it's future.

I still use a laptop I bought in 2007. Once I stopped keeping up with computer games, there was no reason to upgrade: a laptop made in 2007 still posts on internet message boards as well as a laptop made today, and my video and photo editing needs don't require post-2007 technology.

I thought the thing died in 2010, and I had enough cash with me to buy a brand new replacement when I took it to the store, but it turned out that the part broken was literally the only part of the laptop still under 100% warranty, so it survived that.

It's easier to use if you close it in Hybernation Mode.  That way it will start up right away.  Eventually the cache and other junks fills up, and you have to close it.

I was getting an ATI display software error after the 20-minute to 1-hour wait.  The 1 GB memory was the bare minimum for Internet work, I think.

Working nights  ...  before I went to bed, I shut it down.    Got the message that it was going to download some BS and not to turn the PC off.   Got up at midnight to come to work and the same message was on the screen.    If it's still on when I get home, I'm gonna shoot it.   BOOM !

I'd go for this one. I had an Acer laptop that I bought in 2006 and its still running to this day with some good specs. I've only had to reformat it twice. One was because of a virus I had that was my fault. The second time was a year or so ago when I wanted to make it like new since I was giving it tomy brother.

All of a sudden the laptop is working fine.    It locked up continuously and now  ...  no problem.   Wonder how long this will last?   (I hope through tonight's game.)
