The Nats didn't make as much of a splash in free agency as the Marlins did this past offseason, but they were rumored to be in on many of the big names who eventually signed elsewhere. They can very likely afford Josh Hamilton, who will be the top free-agent hitter available and would fit nicely between Ryan Zimmerman and Morse in the middle of the lineup. There is a significant risk involved with Hamilton but he could be the bat that pushes them over the top. That is, if they don't win it all this season.

There's no way we sign Hamilton, but man a OF of Hamilton-Harper-Werth with Morse at 1B would be interesting.  I suspect we keep Morse in LF though and give Moore a chance to play everyday at 1B.

I think our CF/leadoff man next season will be Corey Brown

I will be extremely disappointed if we do anything that cuts payroll and expected wins, the year after we [hopefully] make the playoffs.

How can Rizzo possibly explain his way out of letting a 3-win player go over $10 million and playing a guy with about 150 major league plate appearances at 1B?

The option with LaRoche is mutual. Can't make him take it.

I've said it before and I still believe that they envision using 1B as a near DH after LaRoche and Morse are gone. Use Moore as a bopper "everyday" guy and then let guys like Rendon, Werth, and maybe even Zimmerman have off days there.

I'm not saying we need to add payroll, just keep the roster intact. I don't actually think you can look at this roster and assume there will be a significantly different result next season. In fact, the overall outlook might be an INCREASE in wins next season, not a decrease. LaRoche and Desmond might give back a couple of wins, but you can probably expect to get them back from Zimmerman, Werth, Harper, anything but Flores, etc.

But if you're expected to be a 91 or 92 win team with a "reasonable" payroll, you can't monkey around letting decently priced players go to replace them with unknown quantities.

So give LaRoche an extra year for $10 million, or a player option. Who cares? He's not getting 3 years anywhere.

Sure he will.  He's coming off a career year and the past two seasons he was healthy were the two best years of his career.  Someone will give him 3 years if he wants it.

LaRoche is having a career year, and Moore has shown he can hit at this level.  It's not far-fetched to think that next year's stats aren't all that different between the two of them.

I cannot believe that as much as I like Moore that they will not try to re-sign ALR. He might agree to the MUTUAL option as a home type discount for missing last year.

he seems like the kind of guy who MIGHT do that.  I wouldn't expect it though.

I wouldn't be shocked to see them make a run at him.  I think it would bring about a decent shakeup to the roster if they did, though.  I'm not sure Rizzo wants to do that.  But a Harper, Zim, Hamilton, Werth, LaRoche, Desmond, lineup would be fun.

I wouldn't go more than 4 years for Hamilton but I'd much rather splurge on him than Bourne.

Remember, if you go after a new CF, you're not replacing LaRoche's bat with Morse. You're replacing LaRoche's bat with the new CFer's bat.

Werth is a much better than average base runner and gets on base at a solid clip.  We could do worse.

We could have the best DL in the league with Zimmerman, Werth, and Hamilton locked up for years.

DL?  disabled list?

werth has played at least 134 games since '08.

hamilton was hurt in '09 and missed half the season, outside of that he had played in 156, 133 and 121 games...this year he has already played in 108 ballgames.

Zimmerman, for as many injuries as he has had ... has played in more games than you would think.  he has played in at least 100 games every season (excluding his rookie 20 game call-up season).  4 times he has gone over the 140 game mark, which he should hit this year too.
