Can we step back from the ledge, please?
« Topic Start: August 01, 2012, 06:15:17 AM »
The gloom and doom after last night’s loss seemed a bit more gloomy and doomy than usual, after a loss.  Perhaps the enhanced gloominess came from the lack of activity from the front office at the trade deadline?

But…

…every team has bad games and, make no mistake, this was a really bad, ugly game, in many, many ways.   The team did, however, just complete a 6-1 road trip so please, can we wait until we have a lot more evidence that the team really is the team that lost to the Phillies last night, as opposed to a team that just had a bad game?

I hate being the voice of reason!

Yup. It's a loss. The best teams expect 60 every season. And they didn't play well and deserved to lose. The collapse against the Braves was far worse, but they treated that for what it was as well - one loss.

I agree, it's only 1 loss, acknowledge and move on.

But to offer an explanation from my perspective on why those losses are tough. As a fan, I see a team coming home off a 6-1 trip, facing the Phillies, and want to see a whoopin'. I want the players to want to put a whooping' on them for us. And then the players go out and drop a turd in the punch bowl.

We'll get them tonight.

They had a let down after the Boston/Toronto road trip as well. Philly had a let down after the Brewers as well. Philly still has some very good components and are far scarier than some want to believe.

Last night was ugly, but you're all right, it was only one loss.  Still, three shutouts over this recent stretch is some cause for concern, and I'm a little worried about LaRoche and Zimmerman as well.  If they aren't back in the lineup very soon, it could get ugly.  Mark DeRosa should never start another game for us - he's basically the current version of Matt Stairs.

Who was it that said, "all teams win 60 games and all teams lose 60 games - it's what you do with the other 42 games that matters."?

Part of what made this game soo gloomy and doomy was it was the Phillies one of our division rivals who in years past have eaten and spit us out so many times we lost count. Couple that with Snotlanta being on a decent winning streak and the fact that after this series with the Phillls we have a foursome with the Fish (another division team that has torn us apart many times)

I hope we can:
1) Win these next 2 games with Philly.
2) Win at least 2 of the 4 games with Miami.
3) The Braves start a huge losing streak.

I think we will probably have to bump this thread after every loss for the rest of the season.

Well, it wasn't just one loss.  It was two.    And it's not just two losses, it's a lost series (and a potential sweep) against a last place team ... in our own division.   And we were shut out in one game and only scored two in the other.   Our "ace" was knocked out early.  We didn't just lose.  We looked bad.

Some gloominess is warranted.
