HOF INDUCTION DAY!
« Topic Start: July 22, 2012, 12:52:02 PM »
I remember this one!  I was there!

 http://baseballhall.org/node/11671

End of speech:

But this day and all that it represents shouldn't be just about us or even about all these great Hall of Famers up here. Today is about celebrating the best that baseball has been and the best it can be. I realize what I'm about to say is ironic since I'm often known for the consecutive games streak that helped define my career and my approach to the game, the streak is marked by a number, a start and an end, but I can assure you it was not accomplished with a view to a given number or end point, and I certainly wasn't aware when I started in this game where it would lead me. You see, I truly believe there are no endings, just points at which we begin again, as players do 162 times a season and if they are lucky, a few more times each fall.

And finally, as I experience another new beginning with this induction, I can only hope that all of us, whether we have played on the field or been fans in the stands, can reflect on how fortunate we are and can see our lives as new beginnings that allow us to leave this world a bit better than when we came into it.

Thank you.

I had a conversation with someone in the Red Porch yesterday about Pete Rose and the HOF.  This person said Pete Rose was betting against his own team while playing.  If that's true, it's enough to convince me to keep Pete Rose out of the HOF

Completely false.

One, he never bet while playing.

Two, he only bet on his team to win when managing.

He did bet on baseball while he was a player-manager.  Read "Hustle" for further reference.  If they're going to keep Ty Cobb (why did he retire again...hint hint) they should put Rose in immediately.

Fine. I meant as a true everyday player.

I still stand by the claim he never bet against the Reds.

Please explain re: Cobb. I haven't seen anything into what you're hinting at, other than fighting/racism.

He may have but they didn't have any proof if so.  No proof of betting against the Reds either. Besides, he wouldn't be the only one to bet on baseball in the HOF.  He and Cobb belong together.

An absolute shame Santo couldn't have enjoyed this day while he was alive.

This supposed 'murder' was in 1912, and debunked by SABR http://baseballguru.com/bburgess/analysisbburgess01.html

Not what I was referring to.

Much better references out there (see "Hustle", for example) but here you go:

Both Cobb and Rose's cases sound similar. Rose, unfortunately for him, played in a time with more media coverage.

Rose also didn't do himself any favors by being an aloof jackass when he should have been more civil and apologetic.

Uh and admit it from the get go.  Not play on he was innocent.  No IMO he does not belong in the hall.  He's a disgrace.  Whether as Manager or player he bet on his own team.  The integrity of the game is at stake.  Hes vot a gambling problem and lives in Las Vegas.

He's now going to have a stupid reality show!

Pete Rose is no more of a disgrace than Ty Cobb.

Cap Anson is the person most responsible for the color line. Cobb doesn't come close to Anson's negative impact on the game

If you want to revoke the membership of players in the hall of fame who bet on baseball, or were in cahoots with those who bet on baseball, then you'd probably have to revoke the membership of just about everyone who played before 1921, after the dust began to settle on the Black Sox scandal.  Gambling was more prevalent in baseball in the first 20 years of the twentieth century than steroids ever were in our day.

They weren't found guilty of it.  Rose only in later years when he wanted to sell his book admitted to it.  GUILTY!  His Jersey is there as well as other Rose artifacts stating his records etc.  He just doesn't have a plaque.   He even has a store next door to the hall of fame.  I as a member wont support letting him in.  Not that I have any say in the matter.

I was listening to him on Xm radio yesterday.  He JOKED that if he knew Santos was a diabetic.he would have stolen his candy bars!  There were times in the field when he barely lasted to the last out to get to those bars.  Not having them if his sugar dropped too low could have been serious!  Idiot shouldn't joke about stuff especially on the day he would be inducted in the HOF.

Rose is a jackass, film at 11.  Still deserves to be in the HOF.

Do you want to remove Ty Cobb and Cap Anson too?
