Comparative dates on which the Nationals notched their 52nd win, each season:

2005 - 8th July (86th match of season)
2012 - 17th July (88th match of season)
2011 - 1st August (108th match)
2007 - 7th August (113th match)
2006 - 15th August (119th match)
2010 - 19th August (121st match)
2008 - 31st August (137th match)
2009 - 23rd September (151st match)

---

THIS DAY WITH THE '05 OVERACHIEVERS: Sunday 17th July 2005, Tomo Ohka, just recently acquired from the Nationals by the Brewers for Junior Spivey, came back to haunt his old team, pitching seven strong innings for a 5-3 win at Milwaukee - Brewers win the series 3-1...record now 53-39...http://espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=250717108.

---

How times have changed...had Valdespin's pinch-hit go-ahead homer happened two years ago the Nats would have slunk out of the ballpark with their tails between their legs. Good to see some character and comeback ability in this team for a change, clawing back to win...and good to see someone else letting runs in on wild pitches.

Further 'how times have changed'...so few Mets supporters in the stands last night (there was one a couple of sections to my right who kept going 'let's go Mets' because he hates the Yankees, and a few behind their dugout)...back in RFK days they were the prime invaders among division rivals.

W: R. Mattheus (3-1); Nationals 52-36, 25-16 home
L: T. Byrdak (2-1); Mets 46-44, 20-24 away

Game Time 3 hours, 13 minutes
Weather   99 degrees, clear; Wind 6 mph

Our third-best Tuesday, and third-best Mets visit, of the season; probably would have been second-best in both cases - Rays visit on 19th June drew 27,835, and Mets visit on Wednesday 6th June drew 27,335 - if the hot weather hadn't cut into walk-up sales. Tonight the rain threat (50% from 19.00-22.00, per weather.com) and continuing high heat, plus the fact that ESPN is televising this one, will probably keep numbers somewhat down as well.

Still averaging 591/fixture better (29,596) than our previous Nats Park best of 29,005 in the 2008 debut season.

Clip calling out Flores

No he isn't. He was questioning his decision to throw a change up.

Ran into OC on the Metro after the game.  Made the 13 minute wait for a yellow line bearable.

In the 10th, I noticed that Strasburg ducked back into the clubhouse after the tieing run scored and then came out and started talking to the coached.  I think he would have pinch hit in the 11th if the game had gone that far.

Stretching the 10th inning hit from a double to a take 3d (was it rules a double and 3d on an error) was definitely one of those no, no, yea! moments while I was at the game, but in retrospect, with one out, getting to 3d was huge because a sac fly could score him.  Harper still shocks me.

Brydak was an ex-O, and I think Beato was as well.  Orioles magic?

Nice meeting you too...earlier this season you discovered the TBSITH difference, and I note now that you've found the Archives difference (like more and more people are doing)...much better place to change to the Yellow line than chaotic L'Enfant Plaza.

Byrdak made 57 appearances, all in relief, for the Orioles in 2005-06 - 1-1, 5.88 ERA, 41 hits allowed, 29 walks, 33 strikeouts.

Beato was a first-round pick (32nd overall) of the Orioles in 2006 and signed with them, but never pitched for the big club...the Mets selected him in the Rule 5 Draft in December 2010 and he made his big-league debut the following year. (Ironically, prior to his selection by the Orioles in 2006 he had been a 17th-round selection of the Mets in 2005, but did not sign.)

From the New York Times:

The loss was a significant one. Before the game, Collins was blunt when asked how much weight he placed on this series. “We need to know we’re still competing,” he said.

I was there last night and I would have guessed a higher attendance. Maybe less than usual no-shows, which seems odd on such a hot night.

I stuck it out til the end with my 9 yr old son and we were rewarded. Even got a shot on TV walking by the Nats Extra set post-game, which one of my friends noticed and captured a screen shot and sent to me. My son was impressed!

do you think the RCRs don't count in the attendance numbers?  The S&S club was packed, so I'm thinking folks turned in a lot of RCRs for this game.

I think that the RCR tickets do count, but I've been wondering the same thing myself. I sat in 140 last night and it wasn't half full so the announced number looks right to me.

According to the 'birthday reel' (the Breyers-sponsored list of birthdays and other welcome-to-Nats-Park honourees they run between the fourth and fifth innings) it seemed there were a lot of amateur baseball clubs in the park last night - maybe they were there on freebies or special invites (I recall some earlier instances of announced attendance looking rather understated on matchdays when there were such invitees in the park).

Looked like it was a much bigger crowd on TV than 26K... but as others have said... it might have been less no-shows than normal.

The New York Post does such great post-match stories when their local teams fail: http://newyorkpost.com/p/sports/mets/mets_relievers_blow_lead_twice_to_971BWcHr83goM6xma2jgAJ

[no back-page screaming headline though since Topic A in NYC sports yesterday was the Knicks letting Jeremy Lin go]

I've personally witnessed 2, Opening Day and last night, with Zimm scoring the winning run both times.  And weirdly, since I don't go to that many games, I personally witnessed last year's July 4 game when Werth scored on a walk off WP.

Cool thanks. Werth? Werth? Who's Werth?  It seems like last season since he's been in the line up.
