Rangers lost out on Hamels, are going to make a hard run at Greinke.  They've got the farm, they've got the cash, and they've got the motivation.

Honestly, of their three big prospects, he's the one position they can afford to trade. Beltre will eventually be gone and they always need pitching.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the Former Nat thread or here in the Non-Nats trade watch. 

Locally, media outlets are stirring, saying that not only is the Dempster-to-the-Dodgers deal still alive and kicking, but that the Dodgers and Cubs have had some discussions about including Alfonso Soriano or Bryan LaHair in the trade for Ryan Dempster. LA is also looking for offense as well as pitching -- but where would the Fonz play on the Dodgers?

Dodgers are also looking at Johnson of Miami and Shields of TB for pitching, as well as Greinke, but a surprise rumor surfaced (to ME it was a surprise) that the Dodgers are trying to pry Justin Morneau and Josh Willingham from the Twins.

Really good job, he damn near matched the Padres haul for Latos and A's for Gio

With the number of wild card teams doubling, you have to think that more teams think they're in the hunt and would be buyers compared to the prior situation.

Thus, higher prices paid for primo win-now talent.

I think the change in the playoff format probably is the driving force. Melvin did a good job of matching up with the team that had the best surpluses to Brewers needs.
