Can we unlock the Giolito thread?  Decent outing tonight: 6.2, 7 hits, 0 er, 2bb, 7ks. Bryan Harper threw 1.1 perfect with two ks.
Squab got it.

I think Rizzo will try and trade him ir Lopez in the offseason for an every day player.

Ah. We'll see. That's too far out for me. I just want to see more good things from the crop of SP prospects!

Looks like it was just a 1 IP performance on Tuesday to preserve him to start this weekend.  He seems to have found his form the last 3 appearances: 14 IP 10 H 1BB 17K 2 ER

This weekend would be a good series for him to gain some confidence for. Rockies aren't nearly as good hitting away from Coors. I hope.

Tell that to Drew Storen.

I think people forget he just turned 22 a couple months ago. I still consider him an elite prospect. He's going to be an elite pitcher for a long time.

A lot has been said about his velocity bring in the upper 90's but he rarely hits 96 and mostly works around 92-93. Is this out of design or he has seen a decrease in velocity ? Is his velocity back up to the high 90's during this good streach he is having in Syracuse ?

Here's what Giolito has NOT learned yet about the bigs: :"At some point, you find that you can overpower hitters at lower levels," Fedde said. "Pretty much everybody can hit a mid-90's fastball and crush it off the wall. Mixing pitches more has been the biggest difference and the catchers here have been great helping me out."

Looks to me the problem with Giolito is that he cannot locate his pitches. He's mixing in the breaking balls but can't throw effective strikes with his fastball. Also no one has discussed why a guy who was throwing 97-98 dropped to 94-95. It all sounds like some type of arm problem or at least a tired arm. After the TJ surgery he doesn't want to say he is hurt.

This may be true, but Giolito is still throwing way too many fastballs, in my view.  He doesn't seem to have enough control over anything, frankly.  The curve has a huge break, but he doesn't seem to be able to throw it for strikes enough for hitters to respect it.  Glad to see such good progress from Fedde.  He really turned it on after a slow start.

We were at his last start...he was routinely throwing 93, sometimes hitting 94.  Didn't see a 95 in the bunch.

I'd shut him down and see what next spring brings...

His average FB has not dropped more than 1 MPH, from Janes' article the other day. He hasn't lit up the radar gun with 97+, but hasn't been that big of a drop. Consider also his age, IP beforehand, and that it's August/Sept. He's still learning. You're exactly right though -- he has not been able to spot the FB, which causes him to be more reliant on it in hitter counts. As Elvir said, the curve is not, right now, a pitch consistently a strike (which would be fine if he was setting up hitters with the FB and CH). Early returns have not been good, but the velo is not the issue right now. Don't be "troubled" by something that's not true, just because we aren't seeing cool 99 MPH pitches.

Giolito has been hittable since low-A ball. Fast ball doesn't move, I guess. Has to learn to grip and rip a ball like Tanner. (Of course, Tanner has pinpoint it almost every time. ) Lots of work left for the big kid.

That's a very simple way to look at. I appreciate it though.

Without going full-JCA and saying "No Such Thing," these are things to watch and see development in. There's been a number of "elite prospects" that haven't made it. The other side is that he's getting his first taste of the big leagues and he'll develop. Both are right.

Good outing last night at Pawtucket.  Just two hits in eight innings.  Just five strike outs but seems he is learning to pitch.  Expecting good things from him next year and beyond.
