Follow the Prospects: Taylor Hill, RHP

Drafted I believe in the 6th round from Vandy in 2011.  NFA Brian described him in a post after the 2011 draft as potential "back of the rotation (5th) starter".

In his last start (5/23), his line was 6 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 SO.  For the year, he's got an ERA of 3.40, and a WHIP of 1.23 (both are lowest among all Suns starters with 6 or more starts as of 5/24, including Meyer and Estevez).  Although he's not a strikeout pitcher, he has an almost 3:1 SO/BB ratio (only 8 BBs in 42.1 innings).  Only Karns, with 3 starts, has a lower ERA (2.59) and a lower WHIP. (1.15).

Hill starting tomorrow's P-Nats game with Harper in LF.  He's having a nice year so far, 6-2, 2.99 ERA, 54Ks, 11BB in 84.1 IP.  73HA though.

Or means that about 24 years ago, too many parents were naming their kids "Taylor". When I was little, I had to learn about Micky Mantle, Micky Vernon, Micky Grasso, and Micky McDermott. Mantle...everyone knows. Vernon was AL batting champ twice. McDermott was a decent starting pitcher.

Maybe the Nationals organization has to re-name one of these "Taylors" "Micky".

Another good start for Taylor Hill in AA: 7 IP 6 H 1 R 1 BB 3 K.

He's had a good season. Looks like he has a chance to make it as a long reliever/#5 SP in 2014 or 2015.

1. RHP Taylor Hill (24 years old, 6th-round pick in 2011 out of Vanderbilt) -- Promoted from High-A Potomac in late June, Hill has continued where he left off in the Carolina League. Through two starts with Harrisburg, Hill is 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA, 10 hits and two walks allowed in 14 innings, with seven strikeouts. He's adapted to what experts call the biggest jump in the minors (A to AA) with savvy. Hill, who was 6-2 with a 2.99 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) with Potomac, has been on a sensational tear. Over his last six starts overall (four at Potomac, two at Harrisburg), Hill is 3-1 with a 0.84 ERA. Baseball America said Hill had the "best control" of Nationals' minor league pitchers after the 2012 season. While obviously not a strikeout pitcher, Hill has 13 walks vs. 61 strikeouts this season. Somehow he wasn't rated by BA as a Top 30 prospect. Guessing that changes next year.

He has been promoted to AAA Syracuse. They have a doubleheader today, so it could possibly be temporary, but we'll see.

Pitching well. Started and had no-decision in 12 inning 2 - 1 loss to Erie in game 2 of playoffs. Both Erie runs were unearned. "Taylor Hill tossed six strong innings and scattered five hits. The right-hander walked two and struck out a pair."

Taylor Hill pitched well against Louisville last night (4/24/14): "Taylor Hill threw seven innings of one-run ball in the game." Struck out six and walked none.

Currently: started 4 games, won 3, lost none, 1.80 ERA, 25 IP, 24 K, 4 BB (did I read that right???), and a WHIP of 0.84.

he's off to a really nice start - 4-1, 1.82 ERA, 34Ks, 5BB in 39 innings.  With that kind of performance he's going to be making his big league debut this year.

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Toledo Mud Hens, 3-0, in a rain-delayed game from Fifth Third Field on Wednesday afternoon. Right-hander Taylor Hill earned the win with five innings of shutout ball, and shortstop Emmanuel Burriss picked up the game's biggest hit with a two-run double.

After four-plus scoreless innings by left-hander Blaine Hardy, Syracuse (20-19) broke through in the fifth against right-handed reliever Chad Smith. With one out, left fielder Destin Hood grounded a single to center field, and catcher Jeff Howell followed with a ground-ball single to right field. Second baseman Sean Nicol loaded the bases with an infield single to third base, bringing up Burriss. The Syracuse shortstop slammed a 2-0 pitch to the wall in left field for a two-run double, plating Hood and Howell to give the Chiefs' the game's first lead.

After the end of the fifth, the teams paused play for a one-hour, 56-minute rain delay. After the delay, the teams traded zeroes until the top of the ninth inning. Syracuse added an insurance run in that frame when Brandon Laird scored from third base when Sean Nicol reached on a fielding error by third baseman James McCann.

Those runs were more than enough for Hill, who allowed just two hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out four and lowered his ERA to 1.99 after eight starts. Hill didn't allow a run in either of his starts against Toledo (18-22) this season after a nine-inning complete game on May 4th. He was bolstered by two innings of shutout relief from both Mike Gonzalez and Manny Delcarmen, with the latter earning his third save of the season.

 You won't find the 25-year-old right-hander on many prospect lists, but he's been one of the more consistent pitchers in the Nationals system since the beginning of last season. He started last week with four scoreless innings Monday in relief of the rehabbing Ross Ohlendorf and tacked on seven more zeros Saturday, allowing five hits and no walks in that one. The former Vanderbilt hurler ranks third in the International League with a 1.63 ERA and second with a 0.96 WHIP across 60 2/3 innings, which also ranks second.

6 IP 7 H 1 ER 0 BB 2 K. 8-1 with a 1.57 ERA. Maybe we'll see him in September as a long reliever though with Taylor Jordan, Ryan Mattheus, Blake Treinen, and Ross Ohlendorf in the picture maybe not.
