Edit: Actually, I thought Weaver went behind Boras' back. It sounds like Boras was in the loop and just disagreed. I love this quote from Weaver:

I don't think that is legally possible, but I bet they verbally tell Boras that he handles the negotiations then Boras tells the clients to shut up to the team and media.

Personally I hope he has an excellent HOF type career and I hope that most if not all of it is with the Nats. I am concerned though that he will peak too soon in his career with this premmie rookie season. But I am glad he is on the team. Personally I would have preferred to have had him be a September call up, but our boys getting all beat up early in the year sort of dictated his early arrival.

He has provided a spark. I mean you can just see the roster has taken on his personality. Seeing a young kid hustle like that as a vet you better be playing hard

I find it interesting, also, if I'm the team, now is the time I take him a large offer- he started with $10 million (including salary through 2015), half to the tax man, a penchant for nice cars, a home for mom and dad, a few vacations... now might be the time to come in an offer him a nice extension

You're exactly right. Now is that time.

Sign him to a ten year deal between now and December, and truly relax a while. Because lets be honest... no one is relaxed about it now. Not truly. Right now it's the elephant in the room. No one wants to talk about it now, just sweep it under the rug until he's 21. But the issue exists and the conversation will need to be had

Still allows him free agency at 29 (not 26 as it is presently). If you sign him to 10/$200 million now; you save yourself a 10/300 million later. And the risk of losing him at all.

One wonders if Anaheim is considering the same thing with their 20 year old Trout.

Coming from someone who doesn't think he's here beyond the next 6.75 years, I'm interested in hearing why not. And "who cares" is not sufficient.

Lots of things can happen between 19 and 25.  It's insane to consider throwing out 10 year extensions to a kid that, while really exciting right now, could easily catch the injury bug and be a flash in the pan.  Not saying either of those will happen just that they could.  Besides, if they Lerners are going to extend anyone they would have thrown JZimm or Strasburg a ton of coin but they haven't.

Another concern; is who will the ownership even be in the hands of when Harper is a free agent if Ted Lerner (age 86 now) is no longer alive? Will it still be the Lerner family? I am not informed as to whether or not Ted has a son that would take over like Steinbrenner did. That's a big deal when talking about a team keeping it's nucleus locked up. I know Ted is willing to spend... but the next guy might not be.
