The Nats are running more this year.  Part of it is Bernadina in the line-up more.  But part of the credit has to go to Harper

The 2011 Nats had more stolen bases in the first half (78), than the 2012 Nats have total (76).

They are, however running smarter. 75% SB rate in 2012, 73% in 2011.

If you look at the 2011 team, after Johnson took over, they stopped running completely, only putting up 28 SB in the second half of the season.

Davey was never a running manager, at least not comparing his Mets to the Cardinals, but the 2012 Nats seem to run in ways that pressure the defense into errors. I saw it up close last week against the Braves, when guys like Uggla or the 1B would hurry plays because Nats were running hard. The Braves would hurry so much that they missed the play. I remember a likely DP in the Detwiler Sunday game, except that the SS tried to throw without really having the ball. Another play on a ball pounded into the ground, bouncing high over the pitcher and 1B and neither could decide who would field it.

Same in the Mets series, especially on that play at 2B when the Mets SS got spiked...but after he had dropped the toss from the 2B.

Not SB's, and the plays often don't show up as errors, but they are mistakes that fielders make because they have to be perfect. A play that Espinosa made yesterday on N Morgan in the 9th, but that other teams often don't make against the Nats.

(Also think of the times that guys have scored from first on a double, or gone 1B to 3B on a single. )

I don't know a stat that would show it, but I think the 2012 team is running more effectively.

Hopefully not before we sign him to that 300 year $40T generational contract.

When Werth returns, I wouldn't be against sitting Harper against some lefties.

I think it's time to sit him a few games. Get him exclusively in a cage or something. Moore in LF, Bernadine in CF, Morse in RF.

Harper just needs some time off.

I have to hand it to Davey, not going to create any extra problems; just letting the kid play it out

A semi-platoon with Moore wouldn't be a bad idea.  Morse-Werth-Moore (hope nobody hits any fly balls) and Werth-Harper-Morse.  I'd actually like to see Davey start slowing Harper down generally.  Treat him like a starting catcher - he's getting 1 or 2 regularly scheduled days off a week.  The only trouble is I'm not sure you can do that if the pennant race is neck-and-neck, because we need his offense.

Agreed. I think letting him sit a few games a week would be huge. Right now he is more or less forced out there every day and we have to remember he is still a 19 year old kid. I think you'll see him pick it back up a little once Werth gets back.

You wonder if having Harper available to PH might affect how opposing managers use righty relievers with men on.  Do you bring in the righty to face Moore or DeRosa or a catcher when the tying or go ahead run is on and Bryce is in the dugout?

He definitely offers versatility off the bench. Someone like Moore or LaRoche gets on late and you send out Bryce to pinch run. Kid has wheels.

I wouldn't say a total bust.

But he's no Mike Trout.

Serious post: It's time to move him down in the lineup. Put Werth in the two hole. Or bat him leadoff and hit Lombo/Espinosa in the two hole.

Take pressure off him. Hit him 7th or so. When Desmond gets back, he'll have some speed to distract pitchers with.

But he is  struggling to hit in the second half. I keep thinking he'll put it together, but he's being eaten alive by breaking balls
