The worst part of that was actually the timing. The mistake itself would be funny if it happened this year. But coming as it did, it became a symbol of everything wrong with the team - "so screwed up they can't even spell their name right." And it gave the national audience an easy punchline.

I was way more bothered when we decided to make Guzman an outfielder, or how often we took a marginal/mediocre player and decided to play him out of position. Paul LoDuca, LF, for example. Or how many players on the 2008/2009 Nats were out of baseball as soon as they left the Nats.

Just for the heck of it I looked in baseball-reference.com and, of the 55 players (30 pitchers, 25 position players - http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/WSN/2009.shtml) who graced the Nightmare Nine of '09, for 11 of them it would indeed be the end of the line*:

Alex Cintron
Elijah Dukes
Victor Garate
Mike Hinckley
Logan Kensing
Shairon Martis
Jose Padilla
Zack Segovia
Steven Shell
Julian Tavarez
Ron Villone

*for now anyway (some may still be playing in the organised minors and have MLB recall rights)

Those were the days when a "home" game against the Phillies meant they'd beat our butts ragged for 9 innings while a Philly dominated crowd taunted relentlessly. There were games I was ready to send the team back to Montreal.

...and change Phillies to Mets and you have the ultimate downside of the RFK-era (2005-07) matchday experience.

The worst is still opening day 2010 and I wasn't even there. The worst I witnessed was the game where they clinched the NL East in the rain and were openly booing everyone left in the stadium.

Nats Park on a 95+ day may be no fun, but one's real heat endurance was tested severely at RFK - especially back during the first season when the stewards took everyone's water off them until the DC health authorities called them off - until then the only way to get water was to waste an inning (or more) on a food queue. But water or no water, the place was a sauna - as Casey Stengel said of old Busch Stadium when it hosted the ASG in 1966: 'It holds the heat well' (now the concourses did provide some cross-ventilation at times but one could not see the match from many areas thereon).
