Martinson has always been a favorite of mine.

Definitely in the discussion for my favorite prospect since Norris departed the system.

He's got a big bat and knows the strike zone... but is prone to strikeouts.

Was hoping he'd get the bump to Potomac to start the year... but I'm thinking if he keeps mashing, they'll have no choice but to push him to A ball soon enough.

Ive always been intrigued by him as well. He played some college football as well, showing he's got excellent natural athleticism. The size, power, and athleticism gives him a lot of versatility. He needs work defensively at short, but has the skills to stay there. He can probably play second and third too, and even has the natural tools to play in the outfield. May potentially be a great utility player to have on your bench. The upside is there for much more, but its nice to have that possibility to fall back on.

MAN AMONG BOYS

• Jason Martinson, ss, Nationals: Over the second half of the 2011 season, Martinson was one of the best sluggers in the South Atlantic League, as he hit 14 of his 19 home runs in a second-half power binge. He still had some significant contact issues, however, as evidenced by his 144 strikeouts last season and his career .248 batting average. That explains why the Nationals sent Martinson back to low Class A Hagerstown this spring so that he can work on his swing—and his glove (he committed 33 errors last year).

So far, so good. Martinson still strikes out a lot (13 whiffs in 28 at-bats this year), but he's also drawn 11 walks to go with four extra-base hits and a .321/.513/.607 batting line and 6-for-6 showing in stolen bases. The Nationals don't have a prospect at shortstop blocking him from moving up to high Class A Potomac, so the former Texas State star's timetable for a promotion depends more on his development than any external factors.

Isn't Zach Walters at Potomac?

Must not be considered much of a threat.

I think he's only played a couple of games.

Also, Rick Hague was supposed to be a SS for Potomac.... so I have to wonder if maybe BA just assumed Walters would get the bump to AA this season.

Yep. Hague is the more intriguing than Walters.

Walters is going to play third base when Hague returns (and Bloxom will move back to 1B).  While Hague is definitely the better prospect, the Nationals developmental staff still thinks highly of Walters.

Martinson 3/5 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs today in Potomac.

Has hit 8 HRs in 108 ABs since the promotion which is impressive in the Carolina League. Needs to work on approach, 9 BBs to 31 Ks still an issue. Defense has also been a problem, 14 errors in 23 games between SS and 3B.

his grand slam was an absolute monster.  He's playing 3B now with Hague at SS.

Martinson hit his 9th Carolina League HR tonight.

On the season between A/A+ he has: 19 HRs, 94 RBIs, 56 BBs, 123 Ks, 26 SBs, 3 CS in 380 ABs.

Very intriguing player. His bat reminds me of Tyler Moore and plus he can steal bases. How many players in the Minors have 19 HRs/25+ SBs so far this season?

He's nothing like Tyler Moore. You couldn't have picked a hitter less like Moore if you tried. I'm not even trying to be critical of you... it just isn't a match in terms of comparisons.

Martinson walks and has speed to steal bases. Moore does neither. Moore has tremendous foul pole to foul pole power while Martinson has slightly above average power. They both strikeout slightly over 20% of the time. That's about all they have in common.

Both are high K/power hitters who drive in runs. Main difference being Martinson's speed and his unique position.

He really has to figure out his D. I wonder if a move to 2B is possible.

Martinson isn't a masher though, which is what Moore's calling card is.

He's got solid power, for a middle infielder... but he's not in Moore's league.

Yeah, that's true. Not many have Moore's power. Martinson has been known to hit some tape measure shots though. He's more of a 20-25 HR guy and Moore maybe 30+.

Including 3 last night in Potomac's 10-1 win over Lynchburg, SS Jason Martinson leads all of Minor League Baseball with 94 RBI.

Martinson hit his 10th HR in 134 Carolina League ABs last night. He only had 10 HRs in 265 ABs in Hagerstown before the promotion. That's sick :az:

This kid has flown under my radar this year -- K numbers are a little worrisome. Perhaps another Danny Espinosa?

I was a big fan of his... pushing for him to get on the WNFF Top 30 last year.

I love the power/speed/position. Worried that he's not walking very much in High A. He doesn't have this type of power over a full season... so he'll need to strengthen his approach at the plate in the coming years.

He doesn't walk like Danny did in the Minors and his defense is a disaster. 22 errors in 85 games this year at SS and 3B.

He's got good pop and speed like Danny but the rest of his game needs some more work. Needs to make more contact and work on his defense. Maybe a change of position next year.

The question is, can he lean into an inside fastball like Danny can?

Sounds like the shortstop version of Derek Norris

Also, 24 and high A ball?
