Different day, different set of circumstances.  No other compelling headlines.  Former MVP having a big day.  Different headline writer/editor.  Any number of things could contribute to that.

There are certainly other as "compelling" stories today.  The Pirates broke a long losing streak.  Everyone's darling, the Marlins won.  Arizona won after a crushing loss yesterday should have made it.  That's a more interesting story then some team avoiding a four-game sweep, particularly in light of HOW the Reds won the game.  The Nationals history is littered with them just avoiding a 4-game sweep that didn't make the headlines.  And Votto wasn't the MVP last year.  Every former MVP ain't headlines!

Interestingly, cbssports.com has a headlines feature as well and the Nationals game yesterday made it but today's didn't and they have more headlines in their block.

None of those stories are as compelling to the audience ESPN is appealing to as the ones that were posted yesterday.

One more ESPN related thing, why is the Yankees-Twins game the Monday night game?  The Twins?  Really?

Strasburg against the Astros is a more compelling matchup.

Not even close.  Yankees vs. anybody will outdraw the Nats, even with Stras pitching, especially vs. the Astros.

The Twins are pretty pathetic this year so far.  But you're absolutely right - it's the Yankees and ESPN :az: the Yankees.  Besides, they probably made this choice a while back when no one knew who'd be pitching.

I gotta disagree.  Unless you live in the MASN viewing area, you are very unlikely to get to see him pitch.  If you're a baseball fan, you've heard about him, you know about his TJ surgery, you've heard about how he's pitching this year.  They want to see Stephen Strasburg pitch.  There's nothing compelling about the Yankees beating up on the Twins...unless you're a Yankees fan and this is shocking to ESPN and the Yankees, there are far more non-Yankees fans than Yankees fans.

That's true.  We have no idea how quickly they can change a televised game.

but there are a lot more yankee fans (and probably just as many people willing to watch hoping the fail) than nats fans (or really fans of any team expect maybe the red sox or cubs). I have to think an organization as big as espn, does the research to find out which match ups should draw the most viewers

As DPM correctly pointed out.

Yankees vs. anybody will always outdrae Strasburg vs. Astros.

"Yankees trump everything" is axiomatic for ESPN, it doesn't need pointing out.

I'd rather watch the game on MASN, despite FP Santangelo

There are more non-yankee fans than Yankee fans, yes, but the percentage of Yankee fans is greater than any of the other percentages.  Ranger fans aren't going to watch Stras vs. the Astros.  Neither are the A's fans or Mariners fans or Marlins or Cardinal fans.  Fans watch by and large their team only except in extreme cases like the playoffs or the World Series or ASG or something like that.  They know that if they want to maximize their viewrship the best way to do that is to include teams that have the biggest fan bases most often.  That's why the Nats are on national games vs. the Phillies and Braves, two teams with wide recognition and fanbases.  Now, when you can get Strasburg vs. the Yankees, like is projected to happen on June 17, then you've got something, but Strasburg alone isn't enough of a draw to turn the ESPN cameras, no single pitcher is.

DPM, nobody cares about ESPN's ratings algorithms.  This is the "Screw ESPN" thread.  I hope that settles this :P

but Strasburg alone isn't enough of a draw to turn the ESPN cameras, no single pitcher is.

As ESPN has picked up Strasburg games against non-Yankee opponents more than once, this is demonstrably false.

Sorry, couldn't help myself :mg:

Strass was a draw as a rookie phenom then as a comeback story- now he's just another really good pitcher

WHAT?!  ESPN ISN'T CARRYING THE STRAS GAME TONIGHT!!! HOW DARE THEY! WE'RE IN FIRST PLACE and 7-3!  It's clearly nothing but bias against the team - they're secretly part of an anti-DC cabal that wants to see the team become a roving barnstorming team based out of Portland/LasVegas/Norfolk/Charlotte and they're implementing their evil plan by withholding coverage.  If this were Philly, Buster would be on a ride-along program with Davey, tweeting things like "Isn't Gio the dreamiest?"

Like that, you mean?  :D

Gotta disagree again.  I can't imagine Rangers, A's, Mariners, Cardinals et al fans, the vast majority have seen Strasburg pitch once (his debut) would not want to see him again as opposed to seeing yet another Yankees game (remember they were on last night) against the Twins.  And I'm even more confident that other NL East fans (and probably Orioles fans) would rather watch Strasburg, in the hope that he fails.

And he's not just another good pitcher because you see other good pitchers on national television.  You never see Strasburg on national television.  Again, I'm sure most baseball fans have seen him pitch once, twice at the most and haven't seen him at all in  almost two years.  That's not true with any other "really good pitcher".

Remember this isn't a game between the Yankees and Red Sox in September.  This is a Yankees-Twins game in April!  Freddy Garcia vs. Carl Pavano in APRIL or the most hyped prospect ever who you've seen once (or twice).

ESPN is all about the yankees and the red sox. It's that simple. And I don't think it will ever change.
