Potomac Nationals franchise to celebrate 30 years
The Famous Chicken scheduled to cap-off season
By Anthony Oppermann / MLB.com

WOODBRIDGE, Va.-- The upcoming 2007 season will mark the 30th anniversary of the Potomac Nationals franchise. To help celebrate, the P-Nats have announced that The Famous Chicken will be in attendance for the home finale Friday, August 31st at Pfitzner Stadium. In addition, the 7:35 p.m. tilt against the Lynchburg Hillcats is Fan Appreciation Day.

Founded in 1978, the Potomac franchise began play in Northern Virginia as the Alexandria Dukes. In 1984, the team was moved to Prince William county with the construction of Davis Ford Park, which was later renamed G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium. Originally known as the Prince William Pirates, the team has also been nicknamed the Prince William Yankees, Prince William Cannons, Potomac Cannons, and the current Potomac Nationals. The Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Washington Nationals have all been affiliated with the club during its history in Woodbridge, Va.

Making his triumphant return to "the Pfitz" after a 10-1/2 year hiatus is The Famous Chicken, also known as the San Diego Chicken. Entertaining fans since 1974, The Famous Chicken broke out onto the baseball scene full time in 1979. He is said to have appeared in front of more than 60 million fans including three presidents (Gerald Ford, Ronald Regan, and George Bush). Perhaps just as diverse as the crowds he has amused are the places he has done so. That list includes all 50 states, eight countries and four continents. The Famous Chicken is credited with being the first official mascot of its kind and setting the standard by which all others are judged.

While it took nearly 11 years for his return, there is no announcement when, if ever, The Famous Chicken will be back to Northern Virginia. Do not miss out on perhaps the final opportunity to see a sports icon.

Season and group tickets are currently on sale now! Individual game tickets, including Fan Appreciate Day featuring The Famous Chicken August 31st, will go on sale on March 17th. For more information, call the Nationals ticket office at (703) 590-2311 x 215.

The P-Nats kick off the 2007 season on the road against the Lynchburg Hillcats on April 5th and celebrate Opening Day at Pfitzner Stadium on April 9th against the Salem Avalanche.
