6) – (Last Week – 6) - Stephen Strasburg’s first big league home run came in his 42nd big league at-bat, which is 93 at-bats fewer than it took his college coach, Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. So he’s got that to brag about.

Nats have been holding at 4th for weeks in the BP Prospectus Hit List, by Matthew Kory.

If the Nationals are in first place 15 games from today, they just might coast to October.

You want to see a team sink or swim? Here's your chance. Today marks the beginning of 15 games against the Mets, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees, and Rays.

4) – (Last Week – 5) - The Nats’ pitching staff continues to carve up opponents with a strikeout-rate that is on a historic pace.

5) – (Last Week – 4) - Stephen Strasburg is 95 innings away from the limit the Nationals said they'd use before the season started. The Nats are going to stay in the race and Strasburg is going to continue to be one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball. But the future of the franchise is very bright, too. I do not envy the decision-makers here come mid-to-late August.

3) – (Last Week – 5) - The return of Mike Morse (a .910 OPS in 2011) to replace the likes of Roger Bernadina (.699 OPS), Rick Ankiel (.673 OPS) and Xavier Nady (.500 OPS) should boost an offense that's 13th in runs per game in the NL.

Not to take anything away from Harper but some of these people either weren't alive or forgot about Kevin "Upper Decker" Maas.

Found a new one at waiverwireblog.com (6/11/2012)

3. Washington Nationals (+0, 35-23, 1st in NL East)

This Week: @ Toronto (3), vs. NY Yankees (3)

A three game sweep in Boston, even if the Red Sox aren’t at full strength, is still impressive. While Stephen Strasburg gets all the headlines nationally, its Gio Gonzalez that is leading the league’s most dominant starting rotation. His 8 wins are tied for 2nd in the National League, and he sports a 2.35 ERA with 89 strikeouts, second behind Strasburg’s 92. Long story short, those two at the top of the rotation will keep the Nationals in first place.

2) – (Last Week – 4) - The Nationals picked up the franchise’s first sweep at Fenway Park. Oh by the way, that Harper kid continues to provide positives for the club.

1) – (Last Week – 5) - The Pirates' last winning season ended on Oct. 14, 1992, when Atlanta's Sid Bream scored on Francisco Cabrera's two-run single, sending the Braves to the 1992 World Series. Bryce Harper was born two days later. Yes, you're old -- and there's no reason someone who wasn't alive while Barry Bonds wore a Pirate uniform should be hitting .307/.390/.553 in the big leagues.

I never thought I would see the day! Rizzo should be executive of the year without a doubt.

Yes it is only June and it doesn't mean much. Its just great to see after all of those awful seasons watching Pedro Astacio, Felipe Lopez, and Odalis Perez. If the Nats keep this up Rizzo is easily the executive of the year. Just let us enjoy it for now.

...power rankings...

I prefer real pennants myself, honestly won...those who prefer championships decided wholly or partly in polls should just sit tight; college football season is not that far off.

7. Washington Nationals (-4, 38-26, 1st in NL East)

This Week: vs. Tampa Bay (3), @ Baltimore (3)

It was a strange week for a couple of teams. We can include the Nationals in on this parade, who went from sweeping Toronto to getting swept by the Yankees. Times don’t get any easier for the first place Nats, but if they want to be contenders towards the end of the season, this is the time for them to flex their muscle. We’ve done a lot of praising both Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez recently, but did you know both those arms trail Jordan Zimmermann in quality starts? Zimm’s 11 is one better than both his teammates, which makes his win total of only 3 that much more impressive.
