How close does it stay to the books?

Close, but when it diverges slightly it really annoys me.

George RR Martin wrote an episode himself.
(Full disclosure: I don't watch the show)

Huh?

I think the show whiffs on a couple characters. If you've read the books I could go into details. Heaven forbid I ever go deeper than this post when discussing  show with fellow literate posters:

Game of Thrones.  :az:

On a serious note, I keep hearing so much about GoT both here and from co-workers...  is there any legit way to watch the first season besides buying the discs?

Not that I'm aware of. HBOGo has them online, but you would already be watching the show on TV if you had HBOGo.

Legit as in legal or legit as in it works?

If you subscribe to HBO, it is on HBOGo.

I feel the same way. I'm always kind of shocked when the show ends, because it doesn't feel like I've been watching for an hour. I always want more.

Exactly. I was looking at the clock last night and when I was 12 minutes in I was happy that there would be another 45 minutes or so... Then out of nowhere the show ends.

Who provides your internet?  I had DTV in 2006 but they partnered with Verizon for internet back then.  Has that changed?

I have Atlantic Broadband for internet/phone. Verizon is available, but only 1- 3.1 mbps. Atlantic BB is 5.? Not great, but better.

just be happy you have that- we're visiting my mother later in the summer and get to enjoy wild blue satellite (up to 1.5 down, 256 up, 350 mb per day limit)

Yep- and Verizon had to divest itself of her area a couple of mergers ago so the local phone company doesn't have the resources to extend dsl coverage

Enjoying Mad Men.  About halfway through the first season, now.  Hasn't reached West Wing level yet, but it's really good.

Since you have Comcast, if you subscribe to HBO with a $10/month special, all of the first season of Game of Thrones is available at no extra charge in the On Demand menu (through June 2012, I think). See if there is a minimum subscription time period.  Maybe you could watch them all within a month or 2 and then cancel it.

As mentioned, you'd also have access to GoHBO.  I've never used that, but I could theoretically watch Season 1 of any HBO series.  They have a LOT of old HBO series in On Demand.  (I didn't tune in to the Season 1 replay of The Wire, which I've never seen, when they began replaying it a month or so ago.)

You mentioned using Comcast On Demand before.  In the Free Movies section of the On Demand menus, there are about 120 free and uncut movies available at any given time.  (Fear.net selections have commercial promotions, but you can fast forward through them.)

You can watch a whole pile of network and cable TV shows On Demand for no extra cost.  (Access to On Demand might be part of a commercial package I subscribe to.)

Comcast has a HUGE library of pay per view films in On Demand.  The cheapest are $2.99, so it would be cheaper to just subscribe to Netflix or Blockbuster, and get them that way.

That was telegraphed at the very beginning of the season.

Finally finished the episode.  I approve now.
