Slate, you are the first person I have seen make a negative comment about The Hurt Locker.

I have not seen it, but didnt that movie win a bunch of awards?

Yeah. It was well deserved.

Seeing it in theaters was intense. So many moments had me holding my breath.

The sniping scene's cinematography was brilliant!

I've seen it I think 3 times now. It keeps getting harder to watch each time though, overpoweringly intense. cmd's right, and also  the way certain characters show up only to die 5 minutes later really suggests a futility and hopelessness that's just as scary as the bombs.

I heard a lot of criticism, this sums most of that up nicely

This time, the soldiers were right. The film is a collection of scenes that are completely implausible — wrong in almost every respect. This time, it’s not just minor details that are wrong.

This times a million.

First off, the movie has ZERO plot. If you cut the scenes and rearranged them, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It's just a collection of supposedly tense scenes filled with supposed military stuff and explosions.

Second, Specialist Owen Eldridge is seen playing Gears of War. The movie takes place in 2004. GoW didn't come out till 2006. And this is just where the mistakes in this movie start. It's pretty pathetic. It looks like it was written by someone whose sole knowledge of the military comes from CNN and action flicks.

The portrayl of EOD types is borderline retarded. They simply don't let people in to the course like that.

The biggest one for me though was that they simply leave the base all by themselves. THIS NEVER freakING HAPPENS. Three guys don't jump in a HUMVEE and drive around Iraq. At least, they don't and live to tell the tale.

So basically, if they had portrayed it as a simple action flick, I'd have been fine. But they tried to portray it as some sort of intense, gritty war movie with psychological issues. And it isn't.

But you could see why someone with no military background might find it to be a good movie, though, right?

Only someone with absolutely no common sense would watch this movie and think it's anything more than an intense action flick

The fact that it won awards boggles my mind (though I blame that mostly on nothing but garbage movies that year)

I didn't find it to be a real depiction of what a bomb squad goes through... cause I doubt any bomb expert would ever take off their suit to defuse a bomb... then again, maybe they actually got that part right and I look foolish even doubting that portion of the movie!

slateman i understand you know this stuff firsthand ... but this was a movie.  IIRC, it wasn't based on a true story.

He's complaining that people thought it was a realistic and gritty representation of what really goes on over there.

I had a friend of mine who's a huge baseball fan who just saw Field of Dreams for the first time yesterday.  How does that happen?

I hated Field of Dreams because Joe Jackson batted right handed. Never could get over it.

Some skip Kevin Costner movies on as a self preservation measure.

Exactly. That's why it won academy awards. Because it was supposed to be a representation of what the Iraq war was. Not because it was a dumb action flick.

He's so hit or miss. Movies like Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves, Robin Hood, Bull Durham are good.

Then he has stinkers like The Postman, Waterworld, 3000 Miles to Graceland, The Bodyguard, ect.

Oh and he's going to be Jonathan Kent in the new Superman movie

It is a matter of taste but if I was going to pick the three most red flagged actors I'd go Costner, Woody Allen, and Nicolas Cage. Seems like people have strong opinions on each of them.

I love him, but I also have That One Friend who says things like "I can't even stand seeing his face on the screen!".
