That's some soddy landscaping work :hurr:

Wow, amazingly shallow root system.  Must be fill on top of hard packed clay.

Aren't you glad the Nats are on the road this weekend? Can't imagine sitting out there with this kind of heat index (although Slowes and Jageler have said on the broadcast that it's even worse down in Atlanta - 104 thermometer, 113 heat index).

Or concrete. I heard that in our neighborhood, the best we'll do is Wednesday before power is back.

I wonder if it's new landscaping with an absurdly shallow planting

That tree was too big, and it's the root system that's holding together the turf that pulled up.  When they build suburban subdivisions, they do a half-assed job of preparing soil for proper plantings.

Another big storm tonight on the outskirts of Richmond. Sigh.

Tornado sighted.

Here in Springfield my whole neighborhood power went out, my sister(s) one in Woodbridge and another in Annandale still have power. This storm came from nowhere I was in shock when it came, earlier in the day at around 7 I was watering my yard :?

I usually keep an eye on the weather, but I heard nothing about that until I was outside taking the towels off the line at 11 last night. Holy smokes that was crazy.

nothing here in NoVa tonight.  We got out of it fairly unscathed except for losing a couple of trees (including a 30 foot maple in our front yard).  Lights stayed on, but lots of trees down in the neighborhood.

The storm tonight hits later.

Finally have cell reception at the house. I doubt I get power back this week, but I have a generator. tom, you have power? Oakton is a mess.

CWG says nothing in the D.C. area tonight, so we caught a break.

Sad to say someone here in Springfield only maybe 2-3 miles away from my house died when a tree fell on his car. His story was on ABC 7 11 PM news really sad story. All in total there was 4 deaths due to the weather, just makes you think about how fragile life is. To bring some good news most of the power in the area is back just some traffic lights here and there still don't have power.

How to stay on top of the outage situation in the Dominion service area: http://outagemap.dom.com/DomComFlexOutageViewer/index.html - click 'Search Locality' in top menu for the situation in your city or county - still nearly half of Arlington out, a bit over a third of Alexandria, 293k overall.

I should count myself rather fortunate that I was only out of commission for 18hr.

Well, I'm here in Oakton. No power yet. Ironically, my old apartment never lost power.

Is metro running? If they tell people that they have to drive in to work tomorrow, traffic is going to blow.

We have power and all except phone service at this point.  Lost our biggest oak, which in turn took out all or portions of 5 other trees, and did some light damage to my neighbor's cars.  Now we're going to have to bring in a tree service to cut down all the damaged trees (remainder of the oak and 5 large white pines averaging 40 feet tall), grind out the stumps and come up with a landscaping plan.

My wife already has some idea$.      :?

Lots of neighbors have downed trees, and I'm talking really big oaks.  Not a situation where the ground is saturated and the wind topples them over, rather intense high winds that snapped them off mid-trunk, in our case 12-15 feet off the ground.  Incredible wind to do that, we haven't had a hurricane yet with the force of this storm in our neighborhood.

One neighbor's house has a tree that crashed through the roof into the upstairs rooms.

If we got one last night, I slept through it, but the one Friday night was awesome... Mother Nature gets hateful sometimes, but the rain was useful.

Per the Metro site it looks like all systems go, apart from the usual delays and weekend track-work.

Old Ironsides sails may have had a problem.  The layers of wood and oak helped protect it from being rammed!  Not sure the effect on wind.

See I remember my history lesson from Boston ;)

Hey ya'll.

I just got power back about 20 minutes ago.

Two..TWO Tornados touched down in my city.  Not sure how you guys were affected, but EVERYTHING out here was shut down. Trees down all over the place, power lines down all over the place, the entire city of Beckley was without power. hell, nearly the whole state of West Virginia was without power for at least the first day.  for 2 days There was ONE gas station that was open. we had people coming down from Huntington just to get gas.

I've been powerless for 2 1/2 days.

and to add insult to injury, yesterday it hit 100 degrees out here.

No AC.   :hang:  The storm damaged the pool in my community that it was closed for most of the day yesterday while they cleaned it up and fixed things around.

The one still lingering effect is that the land phone service still hasn't returned. To show how little that is used anymore I didn't even notice it until just now when I went to check it.

I don't know where these people were from but my sister told me yesterday that she met people who were leaving town for the weekend because they had no power. How did you manage for that time? In other words, what did you do to compensate for the things you normally do that require electricity? I heard that around here grocery stores ran out of ice they had stocked for the 4th of July.
