He's committed to Grand Canyon University, so he's a potential signee.

Had to google Grand Canyon University - didn't know it was real.

Grand Canyon University is a for-profit Christian university located in Phoenix, Arizona, United States.
from their google blurb, those seem somehow opposed

“There were even reports of teams trying to circumvent the system by entering non-prospect names, like team interns, to draft and then pay them a minimal amount in order to divert bonus money elsewhere,” writes Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. “That plan was caught and thwarted by Major League Baseball.”

who would ever come up with something that stupid

So there is no minimium percentage you have to sign a guy for in order to have the balance go to your draft pool- I give it a couple of tears until some team enters season ticket holders in a raffle get drafted in the third round and sign for $1

Just drafted cody poteet.  Our last three picks all by talent alone would have been 2nd rounders.  I like having a safety net like this in case we can't sign our big fish

So if I know of one team that already has a very big deal for a pick after the 10th round, did the system work? #NO

If college seniors are signing for $5K (a) Nats will easily find $s for Gioitio & (b) new CBA did nothing to stop top players from sliding

Jerry Crasnick ‏@jcrasnick
One agent says lots of college seniors will sign for $5,000 in rounds 6-10 as teams shift around $$ under new MLB draft system

This is his baby. He's got to be very happy to be savings he's seeing.

Although, in reality, saving money on the draft is like arguing over the final 5 dollars on a $100 dollar dinner bill.

It's Loria, the Marlins owner.

I see we've drafted some over slot guys in the later rounds.  Am I right that we can offer them $100k to sign and anything above that would have to come out of our allotted budget for the first 10 rounds?

poteet, bolt, and avis are insurance in case we don't sign giolito.  If we sign giolito then we won't have nearly enough money for those three

Would we have enough for one or two (speculatively, of course)?

Depends on what they want and how flexible Giolito is

Nothing official, but the Nats have agreed to terms to fifth-round pick Spencer Kieboom, a Clemson catcher.

Kevin Goldstein ‏@Kevin_Goldstein
Pretty much every pick in the first ten rounds came AFTER a discussion with that player or advisor about what it would take to sign.

Would be great if we could get him though... BA had him as the #56 best player in the draft.

He's insurance in case Giolito gets greedy. There's a few like that, GM's need to hedge now.

Keith Law:

Quote
Washington Nationals
Summary: They went for it, taking Luc Giolito (1) and ignoring his minor elbow issue for a pick we might look at in five years and think was one of the great steals in draft history if Giolito does, in fact, stay healthy. They went safe and conventional after that, with Scrappy McNoTools ... er, Tony Renda (2) their highest-profile bat, and lefty Brett Mooneyham (3) (up to 94 with two future-average secondary pitches but below-average command) their next-best arm. Their later picks might have been designed to save cap room for Giolito, and if that's how it goes, that's still a strong draft.
