As of Thursday morning, though, multiple sources indicated that neither third base coach Bo Porter nor Triple-A manager Randy Knorr were the main candidates for that job.
When the Nationals announced they'd have a bench coach opening earlier this week, both Porter and Knorr's names were two of the first to come up as potential candidates but it appears Porter is set where he is in his role with the Nationals and Knorr hasn't been made a priority for the position if the Nationals intend on moving quickly with the hire.
I am very happy with a good 3d base coach and don't fell compelled to make him a bench coach.
I do not recall where but I remember reading that the next bench coach will be groomed to take over for Davey.
The fiery Backman, 52, is considering the possibility of joining Davey Johnson's coaching staff with the Nationals -- likely as the third-base coach. The Nationals have not yet officially announced Johnson will return next season, but that is considered a formality. The source said 68-year-old Johnson may look to groom Backman for the managerial job, much in the same manner Bobby Cox took Fredi Gonzalez under his wing with the Braves before retiring. Johnson was Backman's manager with the Mets in the 1980s, a run that culminated with a World Series title in 1986.
On November 1, 2004, Backman was promoted to manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks' major league squad.[4] However, only a day later, reports surfaced that Backman had serious legal and financial problems. He had also been arrested in 1999 for DUI in Washington as documented on HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. A year later, he was arrested in connection with an altercation in his home in Prineville, Oregon. In addition, Backman declared bankruptcy to avoid paying over twenty creditors, including the IRS.[5] The Diamondbacks initially stood by him,[6] but fired him on November 5 before ever managing a game. Managing partner Ken Kendrick said that Backman had lied about his past, and only learned about the extent of Backman's problems after media reports prompted the team to conduct its own investigation.[7]
Rizzo type character.
Pat Corrales, 70, is stepping away from the bench coach’s job, which will be filled by a younger coach who could potentially replace Davey Johnson as the Nationals’ long-term manager after the 2012 or 2013 season.
